Shenzhen is a regular destination for me as I chip away the city's sights bit by bit. Located in the northern suburbs of Shenzhen, Dafen is famous for cheap imitations of famous Western paintings. Home to over 1200 galleries, this art community started by a Hong Kong artist in 1989 thanks to its cheap rents. Others followed to create imitations for export.
On the next part, let's visit the western part of the city to see all the construction going on.
Time to head back to skyscrapers. The Qianhai Bay area is in the western part of the city near the airport. A section of it has become a special economic zone co-operating with Hong Kong to develop the services industry. This section is the residential area next door.
Shanghai will no longer lay claim to the tallest building in China if plans by Shenzhen Kingkey Real Estate Development and bKL Architecture move forward. Their proposal would see a 739-metre megatall skyscraper rise in the Caiwuwei commercial area, and that vision recently came closer to reality, with the H700 Shenzhen Tower scheme formally being submitted to the Luohu District Government of Shenzhen for review and approval.
