Those that have lived in Edmonton for a long time understand why these photos have meaning.
Once upon a time, downtown was not a place to linger after working hours were over, unless you were looking for a dive bar, some shady entertainment, or just a quiet place to get high where no one you know would catch you (unless they were doing the same).
"Deadmonton" they called us. It was in the international media during the 2001 IAAF World Championships in Athletics. The name stuck.
And we hated it.
The gauntlet was thrown. We rose to the challenge: citizens, residents, government, business owners, landlords, artists, developers and more, through much investment, effort, risk, pride, and love for our city, we have shaped our downtown into something entirely unrecognizable from what it was fifteen years ago.

I hearby declare "Deadmonton" to be no more. RIP, 2001-2016.
This is our Edmonton. And we love it.
