chillaxin' in santiago, chile

santiago, chile

we spent a week here off and on --- a great city -- check it out!

wiki sez:
Santiago de Chile, or simply Santiago, is the capital and largest city of Chile as well as one of the largest cities in the Americas. It is the center of Chile's largest and the most densely populated conurbation. The city is entirely located in the country's central valley, at an elevation of 520 m (1,706 ft) above mean sea level.

The 2015 population was 7,314,176 and the density was 8,470/km2 (21,925/sq mi).

Founded in 1541, Santiago has been the capital city of Chile since colonial times. The city has a downtown core of 19th-century neoclassical architecture and winding side-streets, dotted by art deco, neo-gothic, and other styles. Santiago's cityscape is shaped by several stand-alone hills and the fast-flowing Mapocho River, lined by parks such as Parque Forestal. The Andes Mountains can be seen from most points in the city. These mountains contribute to a considerable smog problem, particularly during winter. The city outskirts are surrounded by vineyards and Santiago is within a few hours of both the mountains and the Pacific Ocean.

Santiago is the cultural, political and financial center of Chile and is home to the regional headquarters of many multinational corporations. The Chilean executive and judiciary are located in Santiago, but Congress meets mostly in nearby Valparaíso. Santiago is named after the biblical figure St. James. Santiago will host the 2023 Pan American Games.

^ it seems like people dont spend much time in santiago. they fly in and then head south to patagonia or north to atacama, or mostly up to the nearby andes to ski. thats a shame because its a nice, huge city well worth spending time in to explore.

yes la piojera is one of the great dive bars of chile and the world i would say. its very comfortable and atmospheric. a must visit! bar la playa in valparaiso gives it a run for its money though. chile sure isnt hurting for these kind of things. here is a nice write-up:

^ yes the smog is often severe. the city sits in a wide bowl surrounded by mountains, which is quite stunning to fly in and out of. unfortunately, as beautiful a setting as that is, is as much as nature is against a city being there. thats not stopping its booming growth though.
