The Yards - Spring issue launch - March 10, 2016

http://www.theyardsyeg.ca

Join us on March 10th for a fun-filled salon with The Yards‘ team and the core’s movers and shakers. As always, we present an enlightening talk on one theme important to our neighbourhoods. This spring it’s all about why SMALL IS BIG!

You’ll hear from city planner Anne Stevenson and Ikki Izakaya owner Ayumi Yuda about the virtues of tiny spaces—why they’re good for business, good for urban form and good for the community.

The night is rounded out with eats by Smokehouse BBQ and sips by Steam Whistle! Plus we’re raising a toast to our excellent writers and staff, who were recently honoured with five Alberta Magazine Award nominations, including Best Feature stories.

Event is hosted by the DECL Community Space, located at 10042 103 St. Tickets are $5 online or at the door.

So you guys do a launch party for each and every issue being published?
Imagine if the Journal did a launch party each day!

I'm glad they post these little events. Lets me remind my condo management to put out the big recycling bins next to the mailboxes well in advance.

Meh. Omar Mouallem is a shitty writer and his pieces reek of unabashed showboating and narcissism

I'd rather stick pins in my eyes than spend 10 minutes with that dude

Amen. It grinds my gears to no end knowing my community league funds his vanity project & that thanks to its status as a "community newspaper" it bypasses the "No unaddressed mail" sticker in my mailbox, despite being >40% ads.

We get it, you don't like it or how it is distributed.

Go read your New Yorker already.

No, I don't like the content, the format, the stifling amount of ads, the business model, the dude behind it & the editorial tone. The whole thing sucks eggs & I really wish I could opt out of it entirely, but evidently I'm stuck getting it so long as I live in Oliver.

I apologize that a community paper disrupts your evidently incredibly busy life so much.

It doesn't. But it also doesn't add anything to my life. It's wasteful, both environmentally & economically. It's poorly done & poorly run, reflecting poorly upon the community leagues that fund the debacle.

90%+ of the copies never make it into the elevators in my building. Every quarter it overflows the recycling bins. It's trash to the vast majority of people who are forced to receive it.

I know you've got a lot of issues around being able to see things from other people's perspective & an overwhelming sense of superiority over those of us who'd deign to disagree with you, so I'm talking to a wall, but maybe at some point it'll sink in & you'll wake up so you can task your huge amount of dedication & effort in making this city better into making it better for people who aren't just like you.

I am not involved with The Yards directly, but do assist through DECL and that's rather sad that people don't take THEIR community paper up and give it a read.

Perhaps get involved if you think there are opportunities for positive change.

Isn't the whole presentation though a bit of preaching to the converted though?

It's hilarious watching noodle² lose his shit every time a new issue comes out!

Have you guys ever seen what other community league newsletters look like? I'd take the format of the Yards over those useless cage liners any day.

There are several very good community papers produced in the city. The Rat Creek Press for instance is a very high quality community paper with diverse content. And it doesn't need a "launch party" every issue to keep interest alive

Given that there's a $5 door charge, I presume the launch parties help pay for the paper. Although I likely won't attend any of these hipster-hobnob launch parties, I don't mind the paper itself. Each issue, I religiously read it and then chuck it into my recycling blue bag. Most of the content are really no different from what's discussed on this board and the other place except it reaches a wider audience.

^that does not factor in really, it is about getting people together to chat about the issue's topic, socialize and discuss...

Yeah, I'd take the rat creek over omar's self-aggrandizing screeds any day of the week.

Thankfully I likely won't be in the zone to get it much longer. Time to get me a house!

The summer issue launch was last Thursday with a focus on heritage buildings and live music.

Enjoy!
