Funny you should say that! Over the course of the last week there was a really bad smell that hung over the house at night. During the day I guess there was enough of a breeze from the ocean, but at night it was the worst smell I have ever endured and I had to close all the windows and doors. The cats wouldn't even go outside!
I didn't know what it was or where it was coming from. A neighbour came over and asked me if I knew what the smell was. I said no I didn't. She said she was familiar with the smell and knew it was a dead deer and she followed her nose and found a big buck had gone into an open wood shed behind the house and died. The garbage people tried to remove the body but it was too far gone and they were afraid the carcass would fall apart so Plan B was to cover the body with wood chips and let nature decompose it. They said it would be gone by spring.

I bought collars for the cats. Felix's collar has a bell, but he brought home 2 birds that he caught while wearing the collar. I also got a LED to add to the collar so now I can see and hear him at night and almost blind Taz can know when he is around.

The start of the 11 hour drive home. They weren't very happy about the car ride but are thrilled to be home and away from the stench of death!

Not "my" house, I was just renting it for August and part of September.
I left Thursday morning to come back to Calgary. The owner of the house was to arrive yesterday so I'll have to phone her to ask her if it still smells.

I'm renting the house again next spring so I'll see what is left of the dead deer if I'm brave enough to look in the shed (spiders, rats, who knows!).
There are no predators on the island so the deer population is out of control.

Friends on the island once had a deer lay down and die in the snow in their backyard. They found it frozen in the morning. They called a butcher friend over to check it out and he thought it looked healthy so he cut it up for them and they had venison to eat all winter.

A rat got in my dryer vent the other day and died (the vent has an outside flap but apparently the rat got in when the flap was open while the dryer was operating). Talk about a stench. My whole house was awful and it kept me awake at night until the rodent guy came and found the rat. Fortunately he came within a day.

The wild ones are normally not dangerous since they will run from you. But if you reach into a trap (e.g., humane trap used by trap-neuter-return folks), you won't have much of a hand remaining.

I have tamed at least 6 wild (feral) cats. Some I couldn't tame. But the ones I tamed became incredibly sweet pets. They are still very easily scared, though. They always will be.

Typical cat :-)

My daughter has a cat named Diesel. It was a stray she found at the Calgary airport parking lot and brought home and adopted.

My Maxibilian sitting cozy in a spot he has never chose to sit before. He was just hinting for me to take a photo of him.

I volunteer at the SPCA and this little 3 month old beauty was brought in as a stray. I am sure she will be adopted in record time. She is quite affectionate as well.

I am pleased that TaZ has bounced back so quickly from surgery to remove a cyst-like growth from his tummy. He will be 14 in 2014.

Just watched the following documentary from BBC, "The Secret Life of the Cat". Should have been entitled "Beyond the Cat Flap". It's really interesting. It involves a study of what 50 cats do and where they go when they roam outside, particularly at night. I really enjoyed watching this.
