And what a damn shame for casual gamblers like me who greatly enjoyed going out to Arlington once or twice a season to have some fun, soak in the sun, and watch the ponies run!

Casinos are obnoxious, and online gambling is just fucking sad.

I agree - It was fun because it didn't necessitate sitting in front of a gambling machine for two hours wasting hundreds of dollars. You could sit outside, just put a couple dollars on a horse race, and enjoy cocktails. You didn't have to gamble to have a good time there.

^ yeah, it was such a mellow way to fart away 50 bucks, and every once in a while maybe you'd hit a big trifecta and come home with an extra $50 or $100.

But it was always about the experience, not the money.

I probably liked it so much because I'm fundamentally not a gambler.

But if you make the experience fun and pleasant and enjoyable, like a summer afternoon at beautiful Arlington Park, I'm in!

Having said all that, I fully understand that the very casual know-nothings like me are NOT what kept Arlington in business.

Oh well.

Time matches on.

Back to the stupid bears.

Sometimes, old things are stupid too.

Get the popcorn ready.....

https://www.chicagotribune.com/2024/...-stadium-plan/

Quote:
The sources said the Bears plan to pledge $2.3 billion, which includes some financing through the NFL. But the Bears’ plan includes an additional $2.3 billion in public financing, along with refinancing outstanding debt for prior publicly financed stadium projects for the Bears and White Sox, according to the sources.
Also worth noting....

Quote:
The 2% hotel tax has fallen far short of paying off the existing debt. As a result, taxpayers still owe $629 million for past renovations of Soldier Field and Guaranteed Rate Field, whose occupants, the White Sox, also are seeking a new stadium in the South Loop.
So - The Bears want $2.3 billion in public dollars, maintaining we won't need to raise the 2% hotel tax..... Even though that still hasn't paid off the past Bears/Sox work.

I would love nothing more than to see a beautiful new stadium rise on the lakefront, but not with this voodoo magic bullshit accounting. The previous reporting made alluded to the stadium only costing a couple billion as that's the number the NFL was saying they would throw behind it.

The previous reporting on this made it sound like the NFL would pay for the stadium construction, with the public on the hook for public infrastructure around/connected to the stadium. However - This article is saying the Bears are only putting $2.3 billion up with the stadium costing $3.2 billion.

I'm ok with public infrastructure spending, but the Bears should be on the hook for every penny of the $3.2 billion.

How exactly are they getting to $1.5B in infrastructure, when the new stadium will sit next to the existing one which already works just fine? They probably need to move some of the roads in the area around the new stadium footprint, and redo some of the park space like the sledding hill. Crain's has $300M for that work, which makes more sense based on the recent infra costs around the Obama Center.

The new station will also end up closer to 2200S than 1200S, so if you want to ride the L to the game it will be better to ride the Green Line to Cermak-McCormick than to go to Roosevelt. Still a pretty long walk, though...

Yeah I agree. They should offer to pay off or accelerate paying down the last renovation, then with available revenue from the hotel tax, cut a deal to defer some of that into an investment account towards a new stadium in 15-20 years. Same with WhiteSox. There are infinitely better ways to invest public infrastructure money than to build these teams new stadiums. (Although the redline extention might be an a worse investment, so if the WS/Bears can somehow secure those funds then go for it )

Dropped acid with Busch Stadium. Did shrooms with Montreal Olympic Stadium.

^ wow. It does look really really nice all around. Too bad we're drowning in debt to even consider significant public financing. Hopefully private entities can come together to make this happen, while also not violating the Lakefront Ordinance. Goodluck threading the needle!

Yeah..... I might have to walk back my potential opposition to this. Johnson said in the beginning no new taxes.

It looks sick......
