Not something ... kitchy with a "flavour of the day" look.

Kitchy and flavour of the day equals boxy and... well, Toronto.

Fluid lines and interesting angles seem to be timeless in modern architecture. Think Sydney Opera House and the like.

I agree with Chad, I'm hoping the new library will be more organic with curved lines so it plays well with the NMC and serves as the antithesis of Cityhall. Boxy buildings can be beautiful and modern for businesses and government but something more inspirational would be appreciated for a place like a library.

Is it going to be around the same height at City Hall? If so, it will be a highrise City hall is 60 meters tall.

So, a Mark Twain quote... Or is the reference to 'sail' the key?

I suspect the latter, and it makes me wonder if the form that will be created will 'dialogue' with the macro-design of the existing city hall, to create a grander vision. It would suggest also that there would be some degree of height to the new library, as at least the design elements would need to protrude up from behind the municipal building such as to be visible from the 8th avenue approach.

I agree with the general response, IE that the tweet doesn't really give away too much, but I suppose that remains to be seen.

The library is significantly shorter than the municipal building.

They're really making us wait for these renderings! Hopefully it's a smooth transition from the tunneling work they're doing right now to the beginning of the library construction - no more delays!

so there is no way you will be able to see it from the west side of the municipal building or even from olympic plaza?

Was that ever even realistic though? The Municipal building is 14 stories tall, and takes up quite a lot of your field of vision from the plaza. I'd have to be a fairly tall building to poke over the top...and when's the last time you saw a 14+ story signature library? There's not a lot of them around.

yeah i was thinking sails and then thought some part of the building might have some element that is visible from the west side.

Seattle's is 11 and thats the only one I can think of thats close.

But shorter is probably better. And definitely easier to program as theres just more usable floor space. Going taller requires more space for elevator cores and stairs.

If our new library is anything near as high quality as Vancouver's library (saw it in person last week, was impressed) I'll be really happy.
