Eau-Claire Market Re-Development

Seeing as this is likely a billion dollar project, and scheduled to begin in fall 2014, I think it deserves its own thread.

2.5Million sq. feet - 550,000 sq ft of retail, 1,000 residential units, 800,000sq ft office, hotel

This video shows it well:

What's with the water fall and the steps? Seems to be outside the proposed development site. Or are they also revamping the river front going west? Looks cool.

Those are part of the plaza that extends all the way into the island. I believe the city is funding part of the plaza and the final design details are being worked out. Lots of potential here. This along with the 7 tower development and all the other Eau-Claire projects underway will make this another huge mixed-use hub within the CBD along with the Stephen Ave/Core Mall area.

It'll be interesting to see if those fold up windows make it into the final design.

Great to see the level of design improving! the best part is that it is not all twins while maintaining a similar style.

I'd assume the atrium and plaza areas will be used a lot as day and/or night time markets throughout the year

This development has the potential to change the dynamic of our entire downtown core, and our image on the national stage, if not the international stage (architecturally, skyline-wise).

I think even since my lurking on the forum days till now has there been such a landslide of positive votes. It is still early but it seems to be a winner. Had it been taller we could of got one more vote

Nah, it's got to be the "Obligatory TallBob wanting it taller vote"

Overwhelming positivity though, excited for it to get going

They literally are building to the shadow maximum! Exactly to the max! 42 stories is nothing to scoff at. Unless, of course, there is a factor besides height that you consider...

Personally, if completed I think it will be one of the best projects Calgary has ever seen.

Sorry guys it's not it's height I don't like! The width/bulkiness of the taller 3 buildings, and once again there are 3-4 buildings that have the same design. A couple of slender twins would work better for my taste.... but that's me.... I did say I was probably alone on this one!

I understand they are maxing density while working with shadow restriction but, the three main towers lined up in a row with nearly identical massing of varying heights distracts from the design of the individual towers. The one retail image looks good but , at the same time, the CRUs could be better differentiated.

Oh ok. That's a valid critique. Now that I think of it, it sort of looks like an ARP conceptual rendering where everything is the same style. That said, each building is fairly unique - yet they share a similar crystalline aesthetic. Actually, the retail and plaza parts are starting to remind me of the Miami harborfront - sterile, modern, overdesigned, exclusive, expensive - which makes me like it less.

I don't know what you guys are talking about. I freaking love it! The buildings work very well as a whole while each staying interesting.

I don't think the similarity of the buildings takes anything away from the design of the individual buildings, this project looks great!
