how is the midwest is represented on SSP (poll)

I'm wondering what state everyone is coming from in the midwest on this site. I understand that some people won't make it to the midwest room, since it's sort of quiet. A couple of thoughts/assumptions:

*There's quite a few Chicago/Illinois lurkers on here.

*Ohio seems vastly under-repped.

Well, I thought about going by city but there's a number of people in smaller cities/outstate in various states that I may have missed.

Results as expected... not surprising that a site about skyscrapers would be disproportionately populated by people living in the skyscraper's birthplace.

The rest of the midwest, while each corner has its own amazing aspects, is not a hotbed of skyscraper construction or history. Even from a general urbanism perspective, many midwestern cities are hindered by anti-urban state governments, powerful suburbs, racist legacies, and a regional economy that is lukewarm at best. Some cities are doing a lot of things right despite these challenges, or because of some special regional advantage - MSP, Columbus, Milwaukee, Madison, etc.

The Midwest forum used to be incredibly lively (early-to-mid 2000s) until most of the forumers here either created and/or jumped ship for their own region-specific forums.

Me personally, I'm just an asshole living in Arizona who is originally from Northern Kentucky (my birth certificate says Ohio, but let's be real about Cincinnati... )

Please don't kill me, ColDay.

the results of this poll have almost nothing to do with chicago being "the birthplace of the skyscraper" or other such silliness.

as buckeye mentioned, the midwest subforum here at SSP used to be very active with urban development discussion from just about all of the midwest's major cities until the great forum splintering saw everyone except the chicago forumers leave SSP for city/region-specific urban development discussion forums.

here's how it breaks down these days:

chicago - SSP
detroit - detroit yes/SSC/SSP
minneapolis - urban MSP/SSC
st. louis - urban STL
cleveland - urban ohio
columbus - urban ohio
cincinnati - urban ohio
indianapolis - SSC
kansas city - KC rag
milwaukee - SSC

I live in the Minneapolis area. But, I come to SSP (for 10 years now) for news on Sacramento (my hometown) developments. I wish I could come here for MSP and Milwaukee (used to live there, too) news. But, that's all over on SSC. :\

there's definitely more st. louis folks active on this specific site, and at least two kansas city people. they just never come into this room. i've probably gone months without coming in here, i guess.

the lack of minnesota folks in this room is particularly telling, because they are out there in droves, hitting that drum.

I just kicked MO up to 3 (even though I haven't officially lived there in about 9 years) since I only ever come to SSP to rep St. Louis.

i'm reminded that there used to be a springfield (missouri) urbanist on this site, i always kind of appreciated that. it has about 500,000 people in the metro, a transit system (big deal, i know), and decent bones in it's downtown for a super-sprawly, nearly southern plains city that feels as much oklahoma "rte 66" or even texas (the 1960s suburbs look very 1960s texas) as midwest.

actually, the downtown is in some respects better than tulsa.
