$19.2M deal suggests Amazon may build a fifth tower in downtown Seattle

Amazon.com isn't done growing in downtown Seattle. Wednesday, the company paid a total of nearly $19.2 million for two adjacent properties.
The two parcels make up a half block on the west side of Seventh Avenue, between Blanchard and Bell streets. That's across the street from the company's recently opened Day One tower and where Amazon plans to build other buildings. Currently on the property are a vacant motel and the office of Pronto, the city's beleaguered bicycle sharing program.
Amazon (Nasdaq: AMZN) officials were not immediately available to comment on their plans for the property, and online city records do not show any proposals by the company for this site. City zoning allows non-residential towers up to 340 feet tall in the area.
If Amazon were to build a tower there, it would be the fifth Amazon skyscraper proposed. Two are built, another is underway and the company has plans for a fourth on a neighboring block.
Amazon employs about 35,000 people in Washington state not including seasonal workers, the vast majority of whom are in Seattle. Five years ago, that was the company's worldwide headcount. Now it has more than 300,000 people worldwide.
Public records show that an affiliate of Clise Properties of Seattle and members of the Clise family sold the Seattle parcels to Amazon. Four years ago, Amazon paid Clise Properties $207.5 million for three full blocks.
The acquisition was not unexpected because Amazon had an option to buy the property. That the company has exercised that right shows it will continue expanding its high-rise campus in the neighborhood.
In addition to Day One, the company occupies another office tower, Doppler, which opened a year ago. Amazon this fall started construction on a third tower kitty-corner from the vacant motel, and it's planning to develop a fourth block at 2200 Seventh Ave., with a 24-story tower and an eight-story building.
