In the article it says there will be 32 floors INCLUDING 5 floors of penthouses and 5 levels of BELOW ground parking, so it's not gonna be 42 floors, but 32. Still a great developement for a city the size of the Soo.

It's 32 floors of liveable units

There is also going to be a medical training centre and a suite ofmedical offices. Also some commercial space at the bottom.

The medical offices will include a walk-in clinic, physiotherapy, optometrist services as well as a laboratory and a X-ray facility.

The medical training centre is a medical school for training nurses.

Some random development photos from around Thunder Bay:

Campus Hill:

Quality Market concept store. The store focuses on produce, bakery, meats and deli, with only 5 short aisles of processed food. It makes the other Quality Market look like Superstore in terms of store environment and quality of service. The windows are really nice. It's more like a farmers market than a grocery store.

Pet Valu just opened recently

Campus Hill strip mall. Probably the nicest strip mall in town. Still a strip mall.

----

Riverside Place in Balmoral Park. Only tenant is still the Federal Government. The two storey portion was just completed, the one storey portion was built about a year ago.

Downtown Fort William developments:

DSSAB Building

Courthouse construction progress:

According to the view from the East End bridge, the tallest elevator shaft is taller than Patterson Court:

So, Fort William will have a new tallest building in 2013.

Centre of Excellence for Integration in Seniors Services (CEISS), at the end of Lillie Street (Hogarth-Riverview Hospital site). The building will be 8 storeys when completed in late 2012. This is the smaller, yellow building on the right. The red one hasn't yet started construction yet, it was added to the plan at a later date.

Porter Airlines has added Timmins as a destination, an will have 3 round-trip flights to Toronto-Island daily beginning in February.

^ We have Porter in Windsor and it's doing amazingly well, way ahead of the company's expectations. Screw Air Canada and their high prices.

Porter's five flights connecting Thunder Bay to Toronto still aren't enough. We basically need a teleportation machine between here and Yonge Street.

What is the current population of Thunder Bay? Have any numbers being released? I'm talking about the municipal numbers, but metropolitan would be good too.

I'm assuming (hoping) that the population is back on the increase.

Census numbers aren't out until February, but the numbers have started rising again in StatCans estimates. For 2010, they estimate 126,700 for the metro area. For October, the working age population (15 and over) is estimated at 102,400, compared to about 100,870 at the 2006 census, for the CMA. I would estimate the municipal population to be around 111,000.

The population is increasing primarily because aboriginals from northern reserves are seeking opportunities here. The aboriginal population in Thunder Bay is the fastest growing of all the CMAs.

Awesome to hear! Maybe one day Thunder Bay and Winnipeg will be the leading centers of Aboriginal culture in the country

Something definitely needs to be done about the impoverished conditions for the general aboriginal community at large first though. A stronger aboriginal community is a stronger Northern Ontario.

I don't think it ever was a serious proposal, but I'm sure if the economy really picks up like they predict it will with the mining sector, a proposal like that for Kenora would be a possibility. Once the brewery project in Soo gets going, we're going to see a lot of Northerner's open their eyes at what a development like that can do for a city's reputation.

If that project goes ahead, Sault Ste. Marie could become the Malmö of Canada.

What's so special about Malmo?

The design of the building in Sault Ste. Marie is suppose to resemble the Turning Torso built in Malmo

Timmins is campaigning to get one of the 3 new University Campuses promised by the Liberal government during the Election. As the last major city in Northern Ontario without a University, Timmins Mayor Tom Laughren is pushing to be keep young adults in Timmins.
The Liberals did terribly in Timmins, but I think with Gilles Bisson as NDP Leader of the House, something might happen, as the Liberals will need the NDP to pass anything, Bisson could put this as one of their (his) priorities.
I think a likely scenario would be for Algoma to set up a satellite campus. Both Laurentian and Nipissing house many Timmins students, but they'd lose out on housing these students in residence, etc.

It's across from Copenhagen.

Sadly, there is no Copenhagen in the UP.

I think that fell through, I am not sure what it will be. I'm hoping the original rumours come back and it becomes a Harveys.
