With large-scale residential and commercial projects coming to the North Shore, the Staten Island Economic Development Corporation has suggested a $175 million tram as an alternative form of transportation for tourists and commuting residents.

- A tram running 24 hours per day could move about 15,000 people the 5.7 miles to and from Manhattan, according to a report on the proposal developed by the SIEDC. That's 21 percent of daily Staten Island Ferry ridership. At 25 miles per hour, the tram would take 13 minutes and 41 seconds to travel between St. George and Whitehall terminals. Based on an existing tram system in Portland, Ore., the SIEDC estimates each cabin might hold about 78 passengers and an operator.

- The SIEDC is asking the city to issue a Request for Expressions of Interest (RFEI) for tram system developers. A spokeswoman for the city Economic Development Corporation, which issues RFEIs, said the tramway is not an area that has been studied. This needs to happen before an RFEI is issued in order to determine if a proposed project is viable. The idea is a bit of a long shot. Potential developers have said the technology to build a tram spanning 5.7 miles doesn't exist yet.

There will never be a subway from Manhattan to SI's North Shore, so I think this could be a beneficial project.

If the subway ever comes to SI, it will be a segment splitting off from the N/R trains from Brooklyn.

Operating costs? IDK if the tram would be cheaper to operate though.

Aside from the fact I would never ride on a suspended cable 300 feet above NY Harbor, this idea is kinda ludicrous. What the city/state/MTA should do is look into reactivating the North Shore SIR line and sending it across the Arthur Kill and connecting it to the NEC at Linden. A joint NJT-MTA commuter rail operation would then run from Penn Station to St George.

I guess a new bridge for cars, bikes, and SI to Manhattan wouldn't be worth the cost.

What about a subway from Brooklyn to Staten Island?

I would build a LRT line from St. George Terminal along the North Shore to Midtown Elizabeth..

^ yes, this is the first choice correct answer for improving SI transit. perhaps there is a way to go east and north with that line over the verrazano bridge with it someday too, or by tunneling to brooklyn, as was proposed a few times, i dk.

along with that, i could also see another north-south SIR line built in SI. it couldn't go down victory blvd, maybe richmond? and it would probably have to go to the mall, but that's as far as i have ever thought about that. and outside of mta expanding from tottenville over or under the arthur kill into nj that's about it really for fantasy SI rail transit improvements.
