I have to confess that I usually cringe and feel the need to dig deeper whenever "common sense" is used in a political context. It too often seems to be applied to things that may be common but turn out to be not very sensible. "No nonsense" also tends to set off my alarm bells, as potential code for government action not necessarily backed up by facts.

Forum = more IVR crap. Don't trust IVR.. except maybe Mainstreet, although that might be dumb luck on their part.

These are the only numbers we can trust: http://www.nanosresearch.com/data

I usually go by a looking at 3-5 polls to find trends. Nanos is pretty good but I have seen them make some bad calls before too.

Never federally. Ipsos confirmed their numbers yesterday:

The last polls released by Forum, Nanos, and Mainstreet before the 2015 election were all spot on.

Smell ya later O'Leary

Businessman Kevin O'Leary will use 4:30 pm ET appearance in Toronto to announce he is pulling out of federal Conservative leadership race.

Kevin O'Leary is throwing his support behind candidate Maxime Bernier instead of continuing to run himself, CBC has learned. #cdnpoli

The reason? O'Leary felt he could win the Tory leadership race but could not win a general election because of his lack of French fluency.

What's Quebec French for "Just visiting!"? "Simplement visiter!"?

He's got an excellent chance now, even though it scares urban Red Tories.

Did not see that coming. Now for some manoeuvring among other candidates to see if anybody can challenge Bernier?

Boom. Bernier is leader. I don't think he has much of a chance at winning in 2019, but he'll bring up some interesting conversations in politics.

Maxime Bernier is the only CPC candidate who could be very competitive with Justin Trudeau. Okay, maybe Michael Chong to a certain degree but Bernier certainly seems to be the front-runner.

Bernier has the most charisma for sure and is a bit of a rebel like Trudeau. He isn't very popular in most of Quebec today but I could see him gaining support in some regions. Definitely not on the island of Montreal though. He's very popular in his home region but kind of a joke in much of Quebec. As for the rest of Canada, I'll discuss that later.

I read Bernier's plan and it's something that could really take off with a number of people. I don't agree with a lot of it but it's certainly a plan and fairly clear. (unlike ON PC leader Patrick Brown with no plan and much vagueness) Bernier's plans almost exclusively focus on economic policy. The only major social policy the plan mentions is firearms. His plan is definitely conservative but the big questions are about how he would shrink government or get out of health care. Also concerning income taxes as he wants to have a 15% rate for income between $15,001 and $100,000 and 25% for $100,001 and above. That would be a huge benefit to wealthier people.

I don't support him or the CPC.

Just for comparison:

The exemption amount for 2017 is $11,635 (0% below that amount)

Federal tax rates for 2017

15% on the first $45,916 of taxable income, +
20.5% on the next $45,915 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $45,916 up to $91,831), +
26% on the next $50,522 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $91,831 up to $142,353), +
29% on the next $60,447 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $142,353 up to $202,800), +
33% of taxable income over $202,800.

Bernier's plan

Exemption amount $15,000

15% from $15,001 to $100,000

25% form $100,001 and above

Is it a given that Bernier's positions, were he to become leader, would translate into party electoral platform, or does he need to negotiate with the powers of the Party? I have no idea what the dynamics are within the Conservative Party.

That would also be an extremely expensive tax cut.
