Maxime Bernier is the only CPC candidate who could be very competitive with Justin Trudeau. Okay, maybe Michael Chong to a certain degree but Bernier certainly seems to be the front-runner.
Bernier has the most charisma for sure and is a bit of a rebel like Trudeau. He isn't very popular in most of Quebec today but I could see him gaining support in some regions. Definitely not on the island of Montreal though. He's very popular in his home region but kind of a joke in much of Quebec. As for the rest of Canada, I'll discuss that later.
I read Bernier's plan and it's something that could really take off with a number of people. I don't agree with a lot of it but it's certainly a plan and fairly clear. (unlike ON PC leader Patrick Brown with no plan and much vagueness) Bernier's plans almost exclusively focus on economic policy. The only major social policy the plan mentions is firearms. His plan is definitely conservative but the big questions are about how he would shrink government or get out of health care. Also concerning income taxes as he wants to have a 15% rate for income between $15,001 and $100,000 and 25% for $100,001 and above. That would be a huge benefit to wealthier people.
I don't support him or the CPC.
Just for comparison:
The exemption amount for 2017 is $11,635 (0% below that amount)
Federal tax rates for 2017
15% on the first $45,916 of taxable income, +
20.5% on the next $45,915 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $45,916 up to $91,831), +
26% on the next $50,522 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $91,831 up to $142,353), +
29% on the next $60,447 of taxable income (on the portion of taxable income over $142,353 up to $202,800), +
33% of taxable income over $202,800.
Bernier's plan
Exemption amount $15,000
15% from $15,001 to $100,000
25% form $100,001 and above
