Denver airport discussion seems to largely reside in the Denver Transportation Thread.

more than 26.9 million passengers flew into or out of Salt Lake City in 2023

Salt Lake City airport sets record as throngs of post-pandemic passengers take to the skies

Salt Lake City International Airport’s passenger numbers continued their post-pandemic takeoff last year with a record number of travelers passing through the new airport’s concourses.

According to numbers released by airport officials Monday, more than 26.9 million passengers flew into or out of Salt Lake City in 2023. The new record bests the pre-pandemic 2019 high by more than 100,000 passengers.

Airport officials said in a news release that the growth can be attributed to more international passengers touching down and departing Utah’s capital. Ongoing expansion projects will boost the airport’s annual passenger capacity to 34 million once they are finished.

“Three-plus years ago, when ‘The New SLC’ opened its doors, I couldn’t have predicted such a tremendous rebound in passenger traffic,” Bill Wyatt, executive director of the Salt Lake City Department of Airports, said in the release. “The robust Utah economy has certainly played a role in the growth, as has the incredible partnership with our hub carrier, Delta Air Lines, and the connectivity they provide with their global partners throughout Canada, Europe and Mexico.”

Delta and partner regional airline SkyWest Airlines served more than 20 million of those nearly 27 million passengers last year. Delta offers trans-Atlantic international flights from Salt Lake City to Amsterdam, London and Paris. It also serves three Canadian and four Mexican destinations.

Last year, Cancun was the most popular international route, with London claiming the second spot. An airport spokesperson said the Mexican flights have performed well since the pandemic hit.

Overall, Los Angeles is the airport’s most popular destination.

The airport has experienced steady growth since opening in 2020. That year, it served about 12.5 million passengers amid the COVID-19 pandemic. Those numbers steadily rebounded in following years with 22.3 million passengers traveling through the airport in 2021 and 25.7 million travelers passing through in 2022.

Salt Lake City is home to the 21st-busiest airport in the United States.

When the old airport set its previous record in 2019, it was operating at almost three times the facility’s intended capacity. The new airport and its planned expansion are designed to meet the growing demand. The final expansion of the existing concourses is due for completion in 2026.

The next milestone for the airport will come this fall with the opening of the Central Tunnel. The project’s completion will ease the often-criticized journey to the B gates.

Despite the ongoing construction and the soaring number of travelers, the airport scores high marks for passenger satisfaction.

I had to take a shuttle from my plane to the concourse upon arrival for the first time ever at SLC. New gates can't come soon enough.

B gates? What airline? I thought they got rid of taxiing?

The entrance to the Mid-Concourse Tunnel is getting a facelift, probably because of plans to use it indefinitely.

Looks like we will see more direct flights, especially international direct flights just in time for the Olympics, provided the schedule comes out as currently anticipated.

The key to stretching SLC flights to 6,000 miles comes down to 2,500 feet
https://www.sltrib.com/news/2024/02/...international/

Quote:
Salt Lake City’s nonstop ticket to the world may be a 2,500-foot-long slab of concrete.

Seoul. Rio de Janeiro. Most of Europe. All of those destinations would be in reach for Airbus A350s and A330s if Salt Lake City International Airport officials get their way and extend the runway immediately east of the terminal.

“This airport, the most important thing is to be one stop from the world, right?” Salt Lake City Department of Airports planning director Brady Fredrickson recently told the city’s airport advisory board. “Be one stop from the world market. If you hit Incheon [South Korea], you’re one stop from the world.”

The plan to extend the center runway comes as the airport smashes passenger records and continues its rapid growth.

Bill Wyatt, the airport’s executive director, said an Airbus A350 can make the nearly 6,000-mile trip from Utah’s capital to South Korea with no problem, but the question is whether it would be able to carry a full load.

“We want to be sure they can because if they can’t,” he said, “the flight becomes less profitable and therefore less likely.”

The Salt Lake City International Airport Master Plan is looking pretty cool.

https://www.rsandh.com/projects/mast...ional-airport/

Almost double the parking garage and rental car garage. A third concourse. And a lot of improved runway connections.

Bill Wyatt recently said a hotel is in their long-term plans but don’t see it there.

Yes! They will be there. They will build a train from concourse A to C. You don’t have walked too much anymore.

Since we're back on the topic of the master plan.

Yes, it does lay out plans for a Concourse C, but in no big hurry.

They will build it before Olympics 2034. They are going to do it immediately.

They should build the tunnel to C now even though they likely won’t open it to the public or put in a train for a decade or more (I say that sadly. I really hope they do earlier). This would be in keeping with their MO — like they did with the service tunnel for the B gates originally. It sets them up for the future. I just don’t see the demand being there for a C now, unless another airline besides delta decided to base their hub in Salt Lake. That’d be awesome but not holding my breath.

I think the next thing going in besides phases 3&4 are additions to the parking garage, which should have been done at the start.
