With the new casino and Probable developments opening up in the next 10 years....it has a high probability of being added. Currently our metro area consists of Minnehaha, McCook Turner and Lincoln counties.

I think Sioux City's growth is going to be hurt even more by the meat plant pulling out of their market area.

>>Overall good numbers, any thoughts on Sioux City's low growth percentage?

I have some thoughts regarding that:

--Location. Sioux City has the distinct disadvantage of being only 85 miles from SF and only about 100 miles from Omaha. Nowhere in the Midwest do we see two regional centers thriving that close to each other. Fargo, for example, is at least 200 miles in any direction from the nearest thriving regional center (either Bismarck, Sioux Falls, or the Twin Cities). Grand Forks is only 70 miles away but by and large is not at the level Fargo is. Same goes for the relationship between Sioux Falls and Sioux City.

--Education. Sioux City has two reasonable educational facilities in the city, but has for some reason not been able to leverage that to an advantage as Sioux Falls has (they even leverage SDSU 50 miles away in Brookings, but there's also Augustana right in town).

--Industry. Sioux City has not been able to attract forward leaning businesses or any major economic sector expansion in many years. It is still mainly an ag and meat packing type of town, and as technology advances FEWER people are needed for that line of work, not more.

I'm not sure if there just isn't proper visionary leadership in Sioux City or what else is going on there (I don't live there...I live in Minneapolis and formerly lived in Fargo), but everytime I have driven through Sioux City it seems like a city stuck in the past. Fargo and Sioux Falls have benefitted from visionary leadership for years, and I get the sense they don't have that in SC. Please, please correct me if I'm wrong.

I think the smell of SC may have something to do with it

Erbert and Gerberts Sub Shop will be at 3500 S. Louise Avenue. Right at or almost right at the corner of 41st and Louise.

Airport to lobby Allegiant to base flight crews, planes here

The Sioux Falls Regional Airport Authority is preparing an informational plan to encourage Allegiant Air to base a flight crew here.

Allegiant is opening a base in Grand Rapids, Mich. If that goes well, the airline might look to other cities in the region for future base expansions, and Sioux Falls likely would rank high on the list of prospects, says Dan Letellier, executive director of the airport authority.

Nevada-based Allegiant serves Sioux Falls with flights to Las Vegas, Phoenix, Los Angeles and Orlando, Fla. Crews and aircraft serving Sioux Falls flights come in from other cities.

Basing flight crews and aircraft in Sioux Falls could help expand the city’s flight connections as well as provide 50 jobs, Letellier says.

Sioux Falls is the #1 small metro in the country to do business in for the 6th year in a row, according to Forbes.

A new Hy-Vee will be built at the corner of 69th & Cliff. This will be the 6th store in the city. They are also planning to update and expand thier locations on E. 10th St. and at 26th & Sycamore.

Kohl's has obtained thier building permit for thier 2nd Sioux Falls store to be located next to Target in Dawley Farm Village. Construction should start in early summer. The Cinemark movie complex is under construction and will open later this year.

Lewis Drug is going to be building thier 6th store in Sioux Falls at 69th & Louise this summer.

Maybe things are finally turning around. What would be nice though, is to see some of the downtown projects get back on track.

In addition to what Sodak said:

- Get-N-Go to build a gas station at E. Arrowhead Parkway and Highline Avenue. (in front of east side Menards, across street from Eastside Wal-Mart)

- Sioux Falls Federal Credit Union constructing bank right in front of the Eastside Menards, and behind the new Get-N-Go.

- East Side Century 12 to open in July

- Burger King currently building a restaurant at 57th and Cliff. Also will open in July according to reports. From the foundation of the building, it looks like it is going to be something like this, unless someone can find a picture:

- A new Taco Bell is going in at 18th and Minnesota to replace the old one across the street. The old one will most likely be leased out.

- Erbert and Gerberts to open sub shop at 41st and Louise this summer some time.

- On The Border Mexican Grill to open a restaurant in Sioux Falls, location and building plans yet to be announced yet.

- Maurices to open a store at Dawley Farm. Nothing else has been announced besides that. Subway and First Bank & Trust to also build stores at Dawley Farm.

- A New bank is being constructed at E. 26th Street and Hwy 11.

- Get-N-Go plans to build a store at 57th and Sycamore Avenue.

- Five Guys Burger and Fries to open store in Sioux Falls, they are currently looking for a location.

Thats all I know of right now, but none of the Downtown developments will continue unless they build the Events Center Downtown, which hopefully now that it looks like Howard Wood is staying, they will consider again.

All good news to hear. It sounds like things are starting to get rolling more on the East side. Now, if we can lease out some of the open strip mall sites in central Sioux Falls and get the downtown projects started.

I just learned that they are going to demolish Longfellow Elementary School in favor of building a new one on its site. Im pretty sad and somewhat angry to see the current school go. Shame.

A South Dakota demographics expert estimates that the Sioux Falls metropolitan area’s population will grow by 60,000 residents in the coming decade and reach 290,000 residents by 2020.

All the confirmed tenants for Dawley Farm village. I can't make out the store logo between Kohls and Staples. I am really surprised not to see any restaurants on here (discluding Subway), Im talking about actual sit down restaurants. I know of rumors that Space Aliens Grill was going to build in Dawley Farm Village.

Also on another note, two new restaurants are going in at 74th Street & Louise. Some Bar from the West Side is going into the already built strip mall there, and a new restaurant is going to be built at the corner to north of 74th, but Im waiting for the planning commission meeting in very early June to see architectural renderings so that we know what it is.

Also Lewis broke ground on what looks like a very nice, possibly very successful store at 69th and Louise.

Hy-Vee Planned For 69th Street
"Store To Include Gas Station, Car Wash, 133,000 Square Foot Store"

As you can tell, this is going to be a very NICE, upscale Hy-Vee with what appears to be one entrance, and lots of brick, facade, landscaping. It will be a very nice addition to the southeast side.

That is the best picture I could get. This will definitely start a war between Sunshine Just 12 Blocks North, however, I see Sunshine still succeeding with that part of the southside, however I think Hy-Vee will attract most of the Harrisburg residents commuting.

This has been awaited for a long time, and hopefully some how we can show Hy-Vee they should begin construction soon. Hy-Vee is lacking in this area of the city, and there is also a lack on the northwest side.

That new Lewis Drug is much different form their current style. Do you know a link for a larger version of the Dawley Farm picture? I'm trying to make out some of the names. Any idea of how soon we'll see all that built?

The new Lewis Drug seems like it is going to actually be successful, since this whole area is lacking a lot of stuff for a very large population. It also looks like a very nice Lewis too, so I hope it becomes successful. I wish that Lewis would have tried to go into the Grocery Market for this one, or try to build a store similar to Walgreens. Like I said, I think it will be successful, and I think that it will help push for the Gas Stop to finally build at the corner, and I know that it probably is stimulating the growth of the new Restaurant at 74th and Louise which I will probably find out what it is at the Planning Commission Meeting on the 2nd of June.

I can make out a couple stores for Dawley Farm. A lot of construction is planned for this fall to open in 2011, that is what Dollar Tree and Staples are planning when I emailed them. I have actually heard that Golden Corral is looking at building over there, however I also heard that Space Aliens Restaurant wants to go over there too, and Space Aliens won't answer emails or anything, so that might be giving clues. Who knows.

Golden Corral sounds like a good addition. I always see them advertised.
