Yeah it's not that all Chinese people want to live in highrises, but they don't mind living next to one. There is less NIMBYism.

I think this is an underrated reason why Toronto and Vancouver have seen such a highrise boom - Chinese immigrants brought new perspectives on what the city should look like.

I wonder when the third building that will go in between the two new buildings will start construction. I forgot what Rush has designed it for. I think an administrative building?

The graffiti barn is gonna open as a black building, then it'll keep getting tagged and keep getting tagged. Eventually Guinness is going get good social media play from the tags and turn it back into the graffiti barn. This time with a few paid artists. (A guy can dream!)

Yes, that's true. Many from there are more about having the ability to walk to some food and what not. Not sure I've ever heard NIMBYism, but over there the development process is completely different than here.

Plans to re-develop a 5 story office building, mostly vacant, at 153 W Ohio (near LaSalle) in River North to 35 residential units (I'm sure the ground floor units would stay?). Apparently they need ZBA approval for it.

The building:

Anyone who has lived downtown or in Chicago long enough. Seeing those ground level apartments that face the alley or Ohio Street. What on Earth. I guess there’s a market. Is the commercial market that horrific you can’t attract a small professional office into that space?

Conversion of the old Otis Elevator foundry at 16th and Laflin in Pilsen into 84 loft apartments was approved this week at City Council. 42 parking spaces provided. I can't find any renderings of the current proposal.

I'm shocked there was zero public debate about this proposal in the neighborhood, when other similar conversions have been controversial in the past. The zoning change didn't include an ARO form so I'm not sure how much affordable housing they are providing and whether is is on-site, off-site, etc. However, Alderman Sigcho-Lopez voted for it...

Oh, man. That building is amazing. I've always wondered what was going to happen to it. The apartments are going to be sweet and that corner of Pilsen will contribute a lot more to the community once they are built... which makes me wonder why Sigcho-Lopez didn't kill it. Maybe the developer has compromising pictures of him?

No... This is on the south side of the train tracks. The Chicago Fire facility is for north of the tracks from right south of Roosevelt to a little south of 14th.
