Speculation that city is looking at buying the old Fairmount school property to build new housing was aired at City Hall and covered on CTV news.

Would make sense, along the lines of that other school property they bought off Clarke and Trafalgar that is going through the planning processes now.

I wonder if they might be interested in the Y next door as well. Not sure if the dollars to upgrade the pool and whatever else to make it a neighbourhood community centre is worth it, or if it is cost effective to buy it and demolish it for the land. Guess that would depend on how much the Y wants for it.

Affordable housing seems like an excellent choice for this school and potential YMCA.

What pisses me off is that the City would have to actually buy the land from the School Board. If the school is no longer needed it should not be put up for sale to the highest bidder. Schools are a PUBLIC asset and hence should be owned by public. Any empty lots/buildings should automatically be GIVEN to their respective cities as long as it to is used for the public good ie housing/parks/rec centre etc.

Isn't that how it usually goes? And wouldn't they get a discount?

From the process of schools being sold for surplus, I thoght it was first offered to other school boards and goverment agencies at a huge discount, before putting it on the public market for market value.

governments get first right of refusal but it isn't free to them. I imagine they pay less than a private bidder would, but I believe they pay "market" value to the school board for it.

Not always the case. For example the SW corner of Oxford and Sanatorium Rd which was "owned" by CPRI (aka the Province of Ontario) was sold to the Catholic School Board for $1 in order to build the high school. I believe that was also the case at Oxford and Highbury for the construction of the high school on the grounds of the Provincial Robarts School for the Deaf.

The 99 Exeter Road is interesting. Seems like they wanted to put a shopping plaza there at one point, looks like it will be purely residental.

Not sure exactly where that particular plot is, but I believe that southeast corner of Exeter and Wonderland was the original re-location spot when Walmart was leaving White Oaks Mall almost 20 years ago. Perhaps that seller had hopes that Walmart was coming and would lead a commercial build up along there.

I still remember how excited that mall manager was back then at what he could do with that space and what the mall would become once he finally managed to get Walmart out of there. Then the place was sold, he retired, and the new owners chickened out.

Yet another suspicious fire at 120 Weston Street the old factory building and former home of Spikes indoor volleyball.

Why this property hasn't been sold off and cleaned up for redevelopment after all these years is strange. Being well above the Thames river flood plain the site could accommodate some nice high rise buildings with a great view of the river valley looking north and a few blocks away from the south leg of the future BRT on Wellington.

Hopefully we see a redevelopment proposal in the future.

"JYSK Coming Soon" sign now up in front of the old Salvation Army Thrift store on Dundas east of Clarke beside McDonalds. Work has been going on with the building for a few months now. I'm actually surprised this is actually them going in that small building. Seems like an odd spot.

Yeah it was reported some time back that Ikea was opening a design studio down there to complement the one in Masonville.

The old PetroCan station on the NE corner of Adelaide and Fanshawe was just demolished clearing the lot. No indication of any plans to build something new on this highly visible corner.

Hopefully it doesn't turn out like the old gas station at the corner of Wellington and Baseline. Demolished almost 30 years ago and nothing has happened with it.

LFP article on recent industrial land purchase by Nexus Industrial REIT. Demand for this kind of property is high in London and we should see increased construction activity.

As long as "166 Dundas St. London Inc" isn't just a paperwork shuffle of a different Farhi company.
