Wonderful shots, Harry. Looking west from Wabash and Wacker, you can enjoy about 5 separate nodes of substantial construction activity. It's just
awesome to see.

Emanuel looking at Soldier Field expansion

Quote:
By John Byrne
Clout Street
9:06 p.m. CST, March 4, 2014

Mayor Rahm Emanuel is in the very preliminary stages of looking at a 5,000-seat expansion of Soldier Field.

The mayor's office and Chicago Park District, which runs the stadium on behalf of the city, are exploring the possibility as Chicago mulls a Super Bowl bid.

"It's an exploration to see what, if anything, is possible," Emanuel spokeswoman Sarah Hamilton said late Tuesday.

Last month, the mayor told Tribune sports columnist David Haugh that Chicago could bid for the Super Bowl as early as 2019.

“The goal is to find a decision that moves the city forward. You don't measure it that way. Would a Super Bowl be good for the city and good for the NFL? I think yes. Would having the NFL draft here be good for the city and for the NFL? The answer is yes. The goal is to have a discussion,” Emanuel said.

Would be a nice gesture if the Brach smokestack was preserved.

Are they doing anything on the Brachs site? Seems like a lot of money to invest in demo of such a large site.

^^^ I mentioned this a while back, but they are building a MASSIVE single story warehouse there. I forget the exact SF now, but I think it was close to 1,000,000 SF.

Owner of the Inn at Lincoln Park on Diversey just east of Broadway/Clark wants to tear down the hotel along with a 3-flat just to the south and put in a new 7-8 story hotel with 120 rooms.

Is the one at 1952 E 71st Street the one where an asshole wants to tear it down to build a McDonald's?

Nice. The current hotel is pretty ugly with the semi-enclosed surface lot right up on Diversey. If I remember right, this was proposed a few years ago?

Now if we could get somebody to tear down and replace that horrific Bank of America/Mattress store just down the block we'd be set.

Good news, and I like that the developer wants a modern design.

Too bad the zoning expired, I always get nervous what the Lincoln Park NIMBY shit parade will come up with

Wow, nice. This corner could see the construction of another 8 floor apartment tower where Walgreens used to be as well. There are so many big proposals being announced for the neighborhoods. I love it, 50-100 1611 W Division sized towers all over Chicago is what we need!

Plus I know there are more big neighborhood proposals out there that haven't been announced publicly yet!

DNAinfo has updated designs for the Grant Park skate park that were shown last night.

Grant Park Skate Park Team Unveils New, Scaled-Back Redesign

Quote:
By Lizzie Schiffman on March 5, 2014 7:01am

With an expected budget totaling at $2.5 million instead of the $3.5 million activists expected, the design of a skate park planned for the southern tip of Grant Park has been scaled back, newly-released renderings reveal.

Initial plans for an artificially raised landscape with a stage and projection screen in the basin of a valley were scrapped, and the high-concept wheel-friendly surfaces were adapted to a more conventional skate park layout, with half pipes, grinding rails and other structures grouped together.

[...]

The new design fits the budget, comprised of $1 million in guaranteed TIF funding and an additional $1.5 million Mayor Rahm Emanuel vowed to fight for in City Council.

But O'Neill said he hopes to continue lobbying Lollapalooza for additional donations to stretch the budget to include sculptures and higher-end surfaces for the park's infrastructure.

[...]

Dennis McClendon, vice president of development and planning for South Loop Neighbors, said the site would benefit from more seating consideration, and possibly vending options.

"It's nice for this corner to finally be landscaped, but it also needs to be activated," McClendon said.

A little less whimsical than the original proposal.

I have it from an inside source which I don't want to disclose - don't remember if it's 71st or another street, but it's around there and a historic building that someone wants to tear down to build a 1 story fast food chain restaurant. Not sure what the status on this is though..

Koo + Associates do decent work. Is this the rendering of the project? Funny how it shows an empty lot across the street. In any event, we've been waiting years to see this happen; hopefully this happens soon.

The structure across the street wasn't included b/c the architects want to show the building in its entirety from that angle.

This is pretty good; they definitely need better hotel options in this area. Most (all?) of the good hotels are downtown.
