Their DP was retracted and the lighting was never installed to the best of many of our knowledge.

It can be added, some of the infrastructure was in place. But costs killed it.

^ It was my understanding that the Ice District was going to host the NHL All Star Game and NHL Draft once completed.

What happened?

Cost cutting - no third Tower - no high end restaurants/stores - only banks/Liquor/cannabis stores.

Expectations were high but the quality is not.

Disappointing.

It is not installed, that is not hearsay, I can confirm it as fact.

Except it isn't disappointing in context, considering we went through an unforeseen pandemic that wiped out probably 3 years of retail potential at critical juncture of development of Ice District, and probably a decade of momentum for DT Edmonton. Longer than that for most NA Downtowns. Ice District has done surprisingly well and brings a focal point of life to Downtown.
As an interim measure, the Fan Park actually has had some credible and well attended events.
With the Oilers going reasonably deep in the playoffs the last few years, Rogers and Ice District are alive with people multiple times a week (most weeks) through the deadest outdoor months right into May just with Hockey.

But hey, if you want everything to be terrible and a let down, that is easy to do.

Henry Singer just opened, hopefully they can continue to build momentum of some more destination dining and retail.

^ within the context of what is built in Edmonton sure but the bar here is not very high.

Even something as simple as LED lighting that was promised can't be done?

I suspect that we will get all of this within the next 3 years, but part of the issue is that they have made these into more of a holiday break and it's been equally clear that they prefer these in warm, beach, major centres.

According Rocket252, Ice District is an EPIC FAIL because of the lack of LED lights on the Stantec? Going a bit overboard with your usual sky-is-falling rhetoric, are we?

We won't be getting a draft. After this year, the NHL is going to a centralized draft—it won't be a big spectacle anymore. Next year there will not be an all-star game because the NHL is hosting a "world cup" of sorts, the year after that will be olympics and the year after that will likely be in Seattle and after that they want to host a bigger version of the world cup. If an all-star game is coming, I don't think it will be for a very long time. Maybe for the 20th anniversary of Rogers Place LOL.

Seriously though, these are the types of things Nicholson was supposedly hired for and he's shown no pull with the league whatsoever. Holland too for that matter.

Deserves to be repeated.

Unreal; curious to see what the impact and trickledown will be for the city.

I think they are calling it as they see it as well, and they are also calling you as they see you. If you don't like it, don't read it, applies to you to.
