KevinW posted a picture of the May Co parking lot in post #9112, and I'm sure we've seen it in other posts too. These are Julius Shulman's photos from 1953. It's "Job 1637: May Company, Parking Building (Los Angeles, Calif.), 1953".

Here's a close-up of the stairs in the foreground. The set includes three similar shots of this location - I've omitted the other two.

I think that this is the lowest tier near W 6th Street.

The car in the center bears a British-style license plate which says "JAGUAR". I assume it was there for some sort of promotional event. The car looks like a 1953 Jaguar Mark VII.

Finally, here's a view with the May Co store in the background. On the left is the newly completed Wilshire Medical Building. I posted construction pictures of that four days ago in post #34075. Ogden Drive no longer exists between W 6th Street and Wilshire Boulevard. In the place of the northern end of the parking building, you'll now find the "Levitated Mass" sculpture.

We have seen various plank roads, elevated cycleways and lengthy wooden piers/wharves. This brings to mind the Rincon Road aka Rincon Highway aka Rincon Parkway in Ventura - and any splintered vestiges thereof.

Well, I'm pretty neutral about the winner. (Or meh?) And the way they show it in various functions make it seem like a hatrack you can hang things on and attach things to. Is that a good idea? Seems messy.

On the other hand, I like it better than any of the five of the other finalists pictured in that link.

Are any of you familiar with this? A commenter on Mstimc's link page wrote:

I live on a block in Los Angeles without streetlights. In researching the issue I discovered that the city did not require streetlights to be installed by housing developers until the mid-1950s.

Installing streetlights requires circulating a petition to homeowners to which a majority representing at least 60% of the benefiting frontage must sign. Once a majority of homeowners approve, they are all assessed a one-time charge of between $3,000 to $8,000 and a modest annual maintenance fee thereafter once the streetlights are installed.

Not surprisingly, many homeowners do not have money like this lying around and are not interested in paying this assessment. Because of this “all-or-nothing” approach to installing streetlights, our block and many others remain dark at night with a hodgepodge of porch spotlights and solar lamps meekly illuminating the dark.

That's an amazing picture. So much change happened since. You can see the excavation for 5900 Wilshire in the center foreground. LACMA is shown in all its glory. As I write this all of the museum except for a small slice of the Ahmanson building is gone. The parking lot for LACMA on the South side of Wilshire is much bigger (wish they had the space now I bet), the Wilshire Galleria condos/apartments take up much of the lot now.

I wonder if the barricaded-off area in the middle of the parking lot is a tar seep? The proximity to Lake Pit and knowing that tar will seep through cracks in the pavement in this area makes it a strong possibility.
