11/27/1954-Los Angeles, CA- A premature darkness, caused by yesterday's punishing smog, backed up this homebound traffic heading north from the Civic Center on the Arroyo Seco Freeway, at 4:55 in the afternoon. Freeway lights were on and automobiles had to use their headlights.

Here's is a wonderful photograph of a L. A. County Schools float in an unnamed parade.

A closer look.



Note the gaiety of the young lady holding the banner on the left. She makes me feel like I am right there enjoying the festivities with her.


I wonder how the schools decided which little girl would get to sit front and center on the float.

All kinds of possibilities come to mind.
Maybe the schools held a contest for best grades...or...a contest for most beautiful. ...or maybe she's Superintendent's daughter.


Oh, and one more thing. Where's the driver of the float?

The driver probably has one of those ferns on his head as camouflage.



This float wasn't nearly as successful at hiding the motoring vehicle. ... It looks like the front of the float fell off.

This photograph is supposed to have been taken in Los Angeles. If it is (Los Angeles) why is there a float from the state of Maine?

I don't believe we have ever seen a photograph of this particular restaurant....Does anyone who grew up in the area remember the Thistle Inn?


I dug up this matchbook in an old file.

I thought I had mentioned the Thistle Inn sign on Nla but my search only found three posts with the word 'Thistle'. . .and all three
are about Kings Men Thistle and Plaid Cologne.

Snatching a little from archives of the LA Times (via ProQuest, via CSULB Library), our saga of the Thistle Inn begins November 16, 1946:



Sadly, I find nothing on the "Loves Way Trio," other than this very ad.

The last I see of a restaurant at the address (the archives I have access to only go to 1995) comes on December 2, 1989, when the "Cache Restaurant" is being closed for a couple of days by the County Department of Health Services for "vermin infestation; unsanitary equipment." Yum, make your reservations now!

I found a clearer version of most of the photo, and the source identifies the location as "Corner of Lankershim and Magnolia Blvds."

I think this might be the building next to the market - it was built in 1936. The corner lot where the market stood is now empty. One of its neighbors apparently appeared in 'The Karate Kid' according to lamag.com.

The location (and restaurant sign) are still there - Rockaway Records has the building. (sorry - no GSV photo - just Google the address...)

This Los Angeles Times column, Skylarking, from June 5, 1953, indicates Adolphe Rempp showed films at his Thistle Inn restaurant in Silverlake.

Here's a quick "then and now". The first image is dated 1961.

"Exterior view of the modern Kingsley Manor, an apartment building located at 1402 N. Kingsley Dr. at Delongpre Ave. in Hollywood.".

Mystery location: (Since we’re looking at Silver Lake) Reprinted by seller, described as Silver Lake 1964. The cars and the hillside stairway might make that seem right, but the aerials from 1965 don’t show any matching undeveloped hills with stairs. The distant mountains in the center right edge are also a reasonable match for Silver Lake area.

Here's a closer look.

There appears to be two men (one large, one small) in the basket and another man (in white) manipulating the balloon with a tethered rope.
The scattered onlookers, some standing. . .some sitting, create a configuration worthy of a painter.

I'm still looking for evidence of a 1910 hot air balloon event in Highland Park, CA.
