By the early 1900s most all of the boy telephone operators had to be replaced by girls.....the reason: Too much swearing.

Memory can be funny at times. I stayed in Manhattan prior to 2001, and the one thing I have no memory of? The World Trade Center. And in all of the dozens of photos I took in New York, not one of them shows the WTC. Not even in the background.

Very cool, is it one of these? I've been meaning to purchase a few models from this website.

While I've never been to NYC, I've transited though it by plane(JFK) and train. Both times I remember seeing the WTC, especially coming in though New Jersey.

Yup, that's the metal model I have, think it's the darker one at the bottom.

I have a black and gold replica of the Richfield Building in my nearby bookcase as I write this. The amount of detail that replicabuildings puts into their models is amazing. Unfortunately this model does not have the "gushing oil" feature previously mentioned. I have bought quite a few models from replicabuildings but I think their Richfield Buiding is one of their best.

Nov. 1, 2019--"Blade Runner Day"

Today is the day at the start of "Blade Runner". Don't see any acid rain, buildings in the sky, flying cars, replicants. WHAT HAPPENED? L.A. is noirish enough, but not that dystopian.

I didn't realize that, CaliNative. ...Thanks for the heads up.

It's a good day to post these Polaroids that were taken on the set. (I've had them in my file for a looong time)

BLADE RUNNER POLAROIDS

Sean Young, so beautiful...so bat shit crazy.

Sean's iconic retro hairstyle.

A few of these people I haven't been able to place.

Sean and mystery person.
..............................................Ms. Young and a startled Harrison Ford.

Joanna Cassidy?
..........................................................Another iconic pose by Sean young.

Rutger Hauer with Sean.........................................................................................................................Mystery person.

I believe the images were taken with Sean Young's Polaroids.

There are additional Polaroids at this LINK

I believe images were Sean Young's Polaroids.

link coming
Sean soooooo wanted to be Catwoman in the second Batman film, the one with Danny DeVito as the Penguin. She would have made a good Catwoman I do believe. Michelle Pffeifer got the part instead. It has been my experience that beauty in a woman and odd & neurotic behavior are sometimes linked. Beautiful women are often very intelligent as well. If you want a more placid life, marry a woman of ordinary looks.

Jimmy Soul had this nailed way back in 1963.

I could never figure out how he got these lyrics past the early 1960's censors.

Does everyone catch the line?

Are we sure that's Joanna Cassidy (on the left)? It doesn't really look like her, and it looks exactly like Sean Young. Maybe it's some kind of screen test? (of course, Sean Young would have to be wearing a wig and colored contact lenses, like Edward James Olmos)

The mystery person is Morgan Paull - he played Officer Holden, the blade runner in the movie's opening scene.

I'm almost embarrassed to admit that I may well be the ultimate Blade Runner geek on this forum... since the movie came out, I've seen it so many times I can't keep count. It must be well over fifty times.

Just use the part of the YouTube address after "v=" (in your case 5Tz5ykjis2k). Paste it into your reply, highlight it and press the YouTube button (last icon before "BBCode Guide" across the top of the reply window. You'll end up with this:

PHP Code:
[YOUTUBE]5Tz5ykjis2k[/YOUTUBE
Which displays like this:

Video Link

I see an empty box in your reply, so it didn't work for you either...

Something must have changed with YT embedding.

HossC's embed worked for me, as did Lwize's quote of it.

Cheers,

Earl

It's showing perfectly for me. In fact, I watched the video within my reply just to test it. Maybe you've got something blocked in your browser. Have you tried a different one? The video works on my laptop in Firefox (my default browser), Chrome, Opera and Edge, and on my phone in Chrome (my default) and Firefox. The only time I got a solid black box was in Internet Explorer, and I never use that, so it was the first time I'd opened it.

Is anyone else seeing empty boxes instead of videos? I see it works for Earl.

Scott Charles, I believe you're probably right about the blonde woman in the Blade Runner Polaroids.
After comparing the pic with the other images of Sean Young; I have to agree that it does look like Sean Young in a blonde wig.

I had forgotten that Zhora, Joanna Cassidy's character, was a redhead.

Pris was the blonde.

Original 35mm slide, Sept. 1958. [Extremely Dark]

Looking west on Washington Blvd. towards the old MGM gate, Culver City CA.

eBay

I'm curious about the small businesses along the left side of the slide. I believe we've seen these small shops only once before on NLA but I can't find the post.

I lightened the slide but it's still difficult to read any of the signs on the shops.

The shops were torn down years ago to make way for a studio parking lot.

Here's the same view today.

It wasn't nearly as lush when I worked here.... Back then the surrounding area was rather unattractive.

To give you a sense of place, the parking lot is in front of the Art-Deco Thalburg Building. (the Thalburg has always been outside the boundry of the studio lot)

The red arrows point to two entrances. (the famous gate with the stately columns hasn't been used in years). That's the red arrow on the right.

The third gate is on Overland Avenue. This is the entrance I used. We were only allowed to park in the Thalburg lot [shown above] on free movie night. (every Wednesday)

Back to the reason for this post:... Are any of you minions noirishers able to read the signs on the small shops in the 1958 slide?

.

Cheers,
