Hey y'all, I'm looking for something and coming up empty so maybe the sleuths here can help me out. Hoping to find a vintage shot of this Bank of America (built in 1949 and designed by Raymond Raleigh Shaw). I figured I'd at least find one in a street scene since it's so near the Crenshaw plaza but I'm not having any luck. Nothing in the Shulmans that I could find either. Thanks in advance!

Southwest corner of Crenshaw and Stocker. Address is 4201 S Crenshaw, also 3600, 3610 W Stocker

Here's another 1950s slide.

It's from the same seller that listed the two Wilshire Blvd. slides I posted last night.

I'm not sure if this one was taken from the Sheraton Town House...but, as you can see, the person taking the photograph was near the top of the builfing. (if I'm not mistaken the cornice is visible at upper right)

Hmmm...it looks a bit like the black and white photograph of the mystery gas station with the neon running man. (it was located somewhere along Wilshire)

Here is another Ralph Morris photo of a less exotic car than the one recently discussed. All the caption says is "Late 1950's Cadillac 4-door sedan."

I really like the feel of this image, and of course wondered where it was taken. There are some clues.

There looks to be a partial street number at the left, and there are business names as well in the store window. I looked for "Bert Appell" in the early 60's CDs and found one listed at 3182 W 8th street. This is a storefront in the Haddon Hall apartments, just across the street from the Ambassador Hotel.

Here is the "now" view, the tenants seem a bit more down-market:

I wondered what sort of business Bert Appell & Co would have been in. There are a couple of references to commercial real estate transactions in the LAT involving them, but nothing else. The photo shows a number of businesses at 3182 consisting of a personal name followed by "& Co." They're just a bit too blurry for me to read.

But, looking at the right side of the original photo gives the probable reason the picture was taken.

The early 60's CDs show "Morris-Associates" at 3186 W 8th, which was Ralph Morris's business name. Can anyone read the word below "Ralph Morris"? I wonder if that Caddy (what year?) was his car...

I think that the Town House is a fair guess for the photographer's location. Here's a 1956 aerial with Wilshire at the bottom. The intersection with the Richfield station is S Virgil and W 6th. The building to the left of the wrought iron is the Shriners Hospital for Children, and the tall building in the background is the former American Storage Co tower at 3636 Beverly Boulevard.

All of the small houses seem to have gone, but several of the larger buildings are still standing.

It looks like I tried to find a picture of the bank back in 2016 when e_r highlighted the ship on building (see post #33965). At least this detail from a 1954 image shows that the bank originally extended right up to Stocker Street (building just left of center) and has since been truncated.

It makes a lot of sense that a good portion of the building has been demolished because it wouldn't have taken much of an architect to design what's left of it.

...but the contour of Wilshire doesn't look exactly right, it's hard to say. There were a few Union 76 stations in Beverly Hills back in the day:

, ..I tried to figure out which room the slide was taken (from).

I narrowed it down to the room beneath the red arrow.

Although the 'wrought' iron has been modernized, only two vertical rows of windows are embellished with the 'wrought' iron in that area of the building.

You can see it more clearly in this view.

It can't be one of the other windows on the right because the fire escape is in the way.

Here's the ebay slide again.

There's the iron finial in the foreground...and the 'wrought' iron at the end of the ledge.
I think (hope) the dark overhang is the cornice at the top of the building. (if not, my theory crumbles)

Earlier today, I happened upon this unusual 35mm slide of a DC 8 flying over downtown Los Angeles.

Let's take a closer look.

I believe we're looking towards downtown from the southeast...right?

.....So much has changed!

Also..how do you think this slide was taken? Is the jetliner superimposed over an image of downtown Los Angeles? .... I ask because the wings look almost transparent.

I think it's probably real and was shot from a spotter plan trailing the DC-8. The shadows on the plane and ground match. I think the transparency of the wings is just an optical illusion. Many of the buildings in the foreground are still there.

Nice to see the little drive-in at Wilshire and Hoover. I wonder if was still a Simon's location by then.

More recently that little parcel of land has been a sad and crumbling parking lot. Now, however, there's a massive new skyscraper being built. It will take up the entire lot...east of Commonwealth Ave, anyway. The city becomes ever more densely built, while the streets remain the same size.
