415 Avondale today

And, of course, Nancy Olson, who turned 90 last month, was also Betty Schaefer in that noir classic, Sunset Blvd...

I wonder if she went ahead and married Artie...

You're correct of course GW. I didn't realize, until a half hour ago, that Nancy Olson was nominated for 'Best Supporting Actress' for Sunset Blvd.

Do you suppose the old shotgun street sign seen behind the boys, presumably at the swc of Avondale and Evanston St, could be the same one there today? (They are getting increasingly rare...the shotguns....)

Here's a short video with some clips from the event. The late singer-songwriter Andrew Gold, who was thirteen at the time, revisits the house and remembers his encounter with the Fab Four.

e_r, I think Deadora is a rather grim misspelling of the Deodara tree, the often pretty Cedrus deodara evergreen/fir with all its droppy needles. It sounds rather portentous to declare that We will put them under the Deadora tree...

Thanks for the correction odinthor.

I might have noticed the mistake but I just thought it was pronounced Dee-AH-dora

....not Dead Dora.

Since we have been discussing Manchester Place in Inglewood, thanks to FW, I thought you all might like to see this map I found in an old file of mine.

specific area showing Manchester Place.

detail

I hadn't noticed the unique street plan on the right...the one with a triangle and circle at the tip.
I wonder what the story is behind that idea.

Sunset Blvd premiered in NY on August 10, 1950; Nancy Olson had married Alan Jay Lerner in March. (She was the third of his eight wives...the man had talent and energy to spare.) Hadn't read before that she was involved in the crash landing of a TWA Constellation at Long Beach airport, in good Hollywood company.

From the Times, Nov 19, 1950

Back then, and into the '80s, planes crashed all the time. An incident at LAX on November 25, 1948, involved another TWA Constellation, this one arriving from Washington, Kansas City, Albuquerque, and Phoenix--no movie people on that one. All got out before fire destroyed the plane.... The only interesting thing in the Times report the next day was that "...a man raised a lament about his new handbag burning." (For some reason, Christine Jorgenson came to mind, but too early for her I guess.)

Not so lucky.

Heavy laden Connie meets North Hollywood in '62.

LAPL

All the king's horses and all the king's men, try to put Connie together again.

Flight data recording did not become common place until the early '60s. Aircraft were still reassembled for forensic analysis.

LAPL

" December 18, 1962 reads, 'Workers sift through wreckage of plane, buildings for clue to crash that claimed eight lives.'"

Very interesting! Do you happen to know the year this map was published? I see that Los Angeles Airport is still Municipal. When did it become International? I also see some streets in Manhattan Beach that did not exist until after the end of World War II.

LAT Oct 4, 1949

Before the big LAX letters, there was this sign...

Paul Drake picks up or drops off someone...presumably Perry...in his '58 Thunderbird in "The Case of the Treacherous Toupée"...

From post 43845

"...that old airport sign reminds me of a scene-setting shot seen from time to time in Perry Mason episodes...in which it would be referred to as "International Airport"--no article "the" ("Della is picking us up at International Airport")"

Which reminds me of the frequently asked question, "Why are LA freeways now referred to as 'the 10' etc," whereas elsewhere a highway isn't "the" 66, say, but just 66...presumably it's because "the 10" supplanted "the Santa Monica" etc etc...but I digress....

Maybe for reasons similar to explain why people from different geographic locales favor certain accents and pronunciations. One imagines that news and media coverage strongly influences how thoroughfares are shorthanded or nicknamed. (Picture Francis Powers, Kelly Lang, Lori Ross or Bill Keene giving live traffic reports.)

Quote:
Between its west terminus in Santa Monica, California, and the major East Los Angeles Interchange, I-10 is known as the Santa Monica Freeway. The Santa Monica Freeway is also called the Rosa Parks Freeway for the segment beginning at I-405 (the San Diego Freeway), and ending at I-110/SR 110 (the Harbor Freeway). The segment between the East Los Angeles Interchange and the city of San Bernardino, 63 miles (101 km) long, is called the San Bernardino Freeway. Other names exist for I-10. For example, a sign near the western terminus of the highway in Santa Monica proclaims this highway the Christopher Columbus Transcontinental Highway.
The San Bernardino Freeway in California near the interchange with the Ontario Freeway (I-15)

I-10 is known to a considerably lesser degree as the Veterans Memorial Highway, and it is listed as a Blue Star Memorial Highway. In Palm Springs, I-10 is also named the Sonny Bono Memorial Freeway as a tribute to the late entertainer who served both as the mayor and as a U.S. Congressman. Another stretch a short distance east in Indio is proclaimed the Doctor June McCarroll Memorial Freeway. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Interstate_10

[In re: Use of "the" in referring to freeways.]

Not sure of the usage's origins; but I find it confusing when the "the" is omitted.

Here's a shouted conversation I had once upon a time when stop-and-go traffic on the Santa Ana Freeway was in "stop" mode.

Neighboring automobilists from another planet area: "Hey, can you tell us where is 2?"

Me (oblivious as to their meaning): Two what?

Neighbors: No. 2! 2!

Me (blankly): ? Two what?

At which point they gave up and rolled up their window.

Half an hour later, it dawned on me what they meant.

LA freeways are not user friendly if you're new to LA If you're driving 70 MPH and don't know exactly the turnoff.....you could end up many miles from your destination.
The solution is the GPS program installed.

Using names doesn't work, since the same numbered freeway will have different names depending on what segment(the 5 is the Golden State and Santa Ana) and some named freeways have different numbers depending on the segment(Ventura Freeway is bot the 101 and 134).

To say nothing of names of memorial highways and memorial interchanges.

I think the freeway issue was best summed up in this bit from 30 Rock.

Nathan Masters discusses the "the" here. His post includes a 1939 map that has some of the same roads that are on e_r's map,
like the Arroyo Seco Parkway connecting to the Inglewood Parkway.
