Apparently part of an expose about young talent struggling for a break in Hollywood . What Price Hollywood? T2, is there a happy ending?

(No descriptions or dates, which permits much poetic license. All from LIFE archives)

Can't recall seeing this image of this long-gone apartment building at 5555 Hollywood Blvd.

Seen it and, given enough time, lived it. Could have said "Took me to the cleaners, Harvey's."

Was the sign a discard or - could this be theater-adjacent parking? everywhere. (Think it most likely the former.)

In my opinion the marquee doesn't seem all that practical. You wouldn't be able to read it until you were right in front of the theater.
There's a parking lot in front of the cinema building rather than a street. The marquee would've been roughly where Yogurtland is today. It was probably placed to catch the attention of traffic on Main Street, which wasn't lined with trees when the cinema opened.

The string(s) of vertical lights seems excessive. (they are lights aren't they?)

They're wind chimes. Yes, it's a frightening thought, and I'm going to go lie down just thinking about it; but they're wind chimes. When I go to Fashion Island, I park near there. The upside is that they hardly ever make any sound (at least in my experience).

odinthor beat me to it!

From seecalifornia.com:
"Made of bronze, the installation takes up an entire panel wall of the building and are considered a sculpture created by mural artist Tom Van Sant. They aren't his only piece of artwork but are certainly one of the most enjoyable because they make sounds. The chimes were installed in September 1967, and set a Guinness Book of Records as the world's largest wind chime."
Here's a better picture.

www.newportbeachhistorical.org

Robinson's is now Macy's, but the chimes are still there.

This is the other building featured in the Julius Shulman photoset that I posted yesterday. It's still "Job 6269: Phelps and Morris, miscellaneous projects (Long Beach, Calif.), 1984". The sign on the side says "The Belmont" and "A Racquetball and Athletic Club".

These look like the racquetball courts.

A reverse view from near the "Sundeck" sign.

There was also a gym ...

... and a small pool.

All from Getty Research Institute

The Belmont Athletic Club is still in business at 4918 E 2nd Street, Long Beach - just a stone's throw from yesterday's Gibraltar Savings location. The front has been opened up with large windows on the second floor. They've kept the Art Deco typeface.

Hoss, I believe this is the east end of the old Belmont Theater and Commercial Building.

The Belmont Athletic Club is where the Wallace Beery banner is...above at far left.

At the lower left it looks like they have installed credit card parking meters.

By 1942, Hindin's had moved downtown to 317 W. 8th, which would have been where this building is now, one with a special name (at least up until May 2011)...

Yep. That's the theater in which I saw the Charlton Heston Ben-Hur when I was but a tyke. That show was so overpowering to this li'l kid, what with the chariot race and all, that I came within a whisker of fainting as we walked out and had to be supported in our walk back to the car. (Nowadays, I think that Ben-Hur is bloated, and infinitely prefer the earlier one with Ramon Novarro et al.)

Thanks Bristolian, but I'm afraid the building is too small. It already houses the Keller Paint & Lacquer Store.

Although, I see where you got 'MASON'.

Here's a rather difficult 'mystery' location.

Unknown coffee shop in North Hollywood, 1950.

https://www.flickr.com/photos/simpso...7PkBuB-cz4GLh/

"My grandmother, Addie Simpson, at the cafe where her daughter Marie was working." -C. Simpson

written on the back of the original photo:
"Taken in North Hollywood"
scanned from the original negative

The Best Clue (obviously )

detail

I figure if you guys can figure out Keller Paint and Lacquer Co., you might have a shot at this one too.

Another pictures from the same source shows the name as Wetzel's Coffee Shop. That hasn't helped me find an address. The search goes on ...

I rediscovered the following screen-grabs in one of my older files.

They're from a family's 8mm movie (hence the lady posing by the Sanchez Street sign)

#1

note the shuttered Plaza Cafe'

#2

old file

#3

below: In this similar view you get a glimpse of the end of the block (not sure if the freeway has been built at this point in time)

#4

old file

Here's Sanchez Street today (no automobiles allowed)

gsv

below: The Plaza Cafe' in 1949 (as seen from the northeast) -this might be just a few years earlier than the 8mm home movie.

*I'm still searching for the source of the home movie. If it looks familiar to anyone, please let me know.
