Here's a couple fun chaps.

eBay

Penny Pleasure Palace (how I'd love to dig up a photograph of that place!), 253 S. Main Street Los Angeles.
I believe the address places it across the street from St. Vibiana.

If you like old cowboy and Western movies you'll like the website that ER posted in his comment....and below the photo. Its a goldmine of information and lots of photos.

Imagine getting 40 saddled horses to a movie location before dawn as we see in the photo. It takes several large trucks, lots of coordination and a whole platoon of movie livestock wranglers.

That was my thought too CBD. Imagine the logistics involved.

I imagine they had to take feed along as well. (unless it was catered )

May 1939.

"Main arteries leading to Pasadena, Calif., are shown choked with thousands of cars, as an estimated 1,500,000 persons make their way to Pasadena, to attend annual Tournament of Roses, the Rose Bowl Football Classic, or a meeting at Santa Anita Race Track, nearby. This air view was from a T.W.A. Skyliner, from which Chief of Police C.H. Kelley of Pasadena, by means of a short wave radio, routed the heavy traffic to reduce congestion to a minimum."

eBay

I tried to line this vintage view up with a present day aerial but I couldn't figure it out..

Is it just me, or does anyone else hate the present day color scheme?

There were all kinds of fun places south of the Higgins Building on that block. Anyway, everything north of the two single-story buildings is a parking lot now. Amazingly the 1902 building which housed "The Arrow" theater, at No. 251) is still there, but unrecognizable (click on FFF's post for the gsv).

(Can you figure out which building housed the Penny Pleasure Palace from the map below the photo? I think it was the "Uncle John's" building)

USC DL dates this photo to 1939:

Thanks for the photograph tovanger2!

oops. I created this post, then realized Flyingwedge posted about this art deco gem back in March of 2013. (I even complimented him on the discovery!)

I'm curious about this tiny room facing the street.
Is it the tiniest apartment ever, or a 'store-front' type of space?

The garage (and the tiny 'mystery' space) is/are unattached to the main building. (there's a tree between them)

Crescent Heights and Blackburn

Oh, I love that one. It's on Crescent Heights and Blackburn, a couple of blocks south of Third. I've spent a lot of time sitting outside of it in my googlemobile. I've never been able to figure out what the little room is.

gsv

The volumes, the windows, the terraces...everything, it's perfect. What fun it would be to own it and do it up as it should be to share with friends. One to dream on for sure.

gsv

According to Zillow, it was built in 1936 and has 5 baths and 4 beds, making it 4 one-beds and a single(?). Zillow estimates the value at almost $2mm.

gsv

(Maybe the little room at the end of the garages is the single?)

Horrible beyond belief. My teeth are hurting and I have a migraine headache when looking at that hideous and repulsive blue paint.

You might be right about the little green room t2 -but it looks more like a studio size. If it's the single, maybe it's where the apartment manager lived.

gsv

below: Kodachrome slide, Westwood Village, 1940s.

eBay

I'm curious about the gray sign center left that I believe says "Riviera Wilshire".
Does that name ring a bell to anyone? I wonder if it was a hotel...or maybe the name of an apartment building?

You can read the sign a bit better in this enlargement.

I am also intrigued by this formal-like 'garden' area in the foreground. So what business (or residence) do you think this was in front of?

Maybe the studio single is now the laundry room or used for storage.

Here it is Slim.

...odd that the article doesn't include the address.

I don't see how a building could be built between the sidewalk and the mural. It must be one skinny-ass building.

How did you know about this mural Slauson_Slim?

That light colored slash angling at the right may be the Arroyo Seco River before it was paved with concrete. Also, the photo may be just south of the Rose bowl.

That's a good possibility CBD. I wish the TWA Skyliner was flying a bit higher.

I've been trying to figure out this building (circled below). My first thought was 'Truck Stop'. ( I am from the Midwest you know )

Del Mar Race Track postcard, 1940s.

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1940s-photo-...item23557379e7

some interesting tidbits:

"Del Mar was built by a consortium including Bing Crosby, actors Pat O'Brien, Gary Cooper, Joe E. Brown, Charles S. Howard and Oliver Hardy."

"When Del Mar opened in 1937, Bing Crosby was at the gate to personally greet the fans."

"By 1940, Del Mar became a Summer playground for many Hollywood stars."

"In 1946 the Santa Fe Railroad began offering a racetrack special bringing spectators, bettors and horses to Del Mar from Los Angeles."

"Throughout the late 1940s and 1950s the track became the "Saratoga of the West" for summer racing."

famous slogan: "Where the Turf meets the Surf."
