I've never knew that "cutty sark" was a short skirt/shirt. I'm familiar with the old tea clipper called the Cutty Sark (pictured above), which is a popular visitor attraction in Greenwich, London. There's also a Scots whisky of the same name, which apparently takes its name from the ship, because the ship was built close to the distillery. The Wikipedia page for the whisky says that the ship's name 'came from the Scots language term "cutty-sark", the short shirt [skirt] prominently mentioned in the famous poem by Robert Burns, "Tam o' Shanter"'. Now it all makes sense

I just noticed if you look at the Tam-O-Shanter sign from the opposite direction it's lit up. (and looks much better)

Have we discussed this interesting looking building before? (it's vaguely familiar)

Why is the 1933 Vermont marble Flint Memorial Fountain in front of Los Angeles City Hall?

Massachusetts-born Frank Putnam Flint's main claim to fame these days was the founding of Flintridge (now La Cañada Flintridge), although he also played roles in the building of the Owens Valley aqueduct and the development of the harbor. In addition, during his six years as U.S. Senator from California (1905-1911), his wiki page claims he made the "mission style" official for government buildings (?)

The fountain seems to be celebrating the "old-boy network" even more than it does Flint:

Thanks for the information and history of the Flint Memorial Fountain t2.

When I look at that snapshot my eye is drawn to the man reading the newspaper.
Who is he? Is he on his lunch break? Is he searching the want ads for a job? We'll never know.

I just noticed the hotel sign on the building across the street. (to the left of the man's newspaper)

Probably not this actual one, but there is still a big orange stand located on Foothill Blvd in Fontana. It is on the property of Bono's Italian Restaurant and Wikipedia indicates that it was originally 3 miles to the east along Foothill. Bono's originally had its own orange but it was torn down. The owner then bought this one and moved it.

There is some indication that the Orange Inn was located at what is now Foothill and Wigwam. The corner of Foothill and Wigwam is in Arcadia. The property was owned by a man named Hal Slemons who had a lot of land north of Foothill in the 20's and 30's.

The Orange Inn was turned into the place called the Wigwam, which was apparently thatched with palm leaves according to a blog here:

According to the blogger, the McDonald's located on the north side of Foothill is where the Orange Inn/ Wigwam was located

Like it or not, the "old-boy network" built Los Angeles; without it, we'd have little to look at here. The fountain belongs in LA.

I'm lost on this one too. Are the Orange Inn and the Wig-Wam the same building? Is the orange still in there under the thatch?
(Note the two smaller peaks on the Wig-Wam match the secondary oranges on the Orange Inn)

He might be! My grandfather, a Hollywood kid, went in the Navy in early 1945 when he was 17. His correct birthdate 9-1-27 is on his papers so he didn't lie about his age. They were recruiting at his high school (Fairfax). He never did get his diploma.

There's a nice coffee table book with lots of really lovely buddy pictures called At Ease: Navy Men of WWII

This handsome sailor and his date are at Waldorf Cellar, 521 S. Main. I sure hope he made made it home safe and got offered a movie contract.
