I've never knew that "cutty sark" was a short skirt/shirt. I'm familiar with the old tea clipper called the Cutty Sark (pictured above), which is a popular visitor attraction in Greenwich, London. There's also a Scots whisky of the same name, which apparently takes its name from the ship, because the ship was built close to the distillery. The Wikipedia page for the whisky says that the ship's name 'came from the Scots language term "cutty-sark", the short shirt [skirt] prominently mentioned in the famous poem by Robert Burns, "Tam o' Shanter"'. Now it all makes sense .

I just noticed if you look at the Tam-O-Shanter sign from the opposite direction it's lit up. (and looks much better)

gsv

I also noticed the brick building on the opposite side of Boyce Avenue.

Have we discussed this interesting looking building before? (it's vaguely familiar)

gsv

note the sign on top of the roof.

It's home to The Griffin bar.

-here are both signs in January.

Here's another 1924 photograph from the same seller who posted the Essman Café, Tam-O-Shanter, and 'Storybook' Amusement Park office.

Van de Kamp's 'Holland Dutch' Bakery

eBay

There's a connection between Van de Kamps and the Tam-O-Shanter I wasn't aware of. (see below)

I love this photo, E_R, thanks for looking up Tamaris and finding it!
I've seen a lot of Steichen's WWII photos, who knew about ones like this!

Why is the 1933 Vermont marble Flint Memorial Fountain in front of Los Angeles City Hall?

Massachusetts-born Frank Putnam Flint's main claim to fame these days was the founding of Flintridge (now La Cañada Flintridge), although he also played roles in the building of the Owens Valley aqueduct and the development of the harbor. In addition, during his six years as U.S. Senator from California (1905-1911), his wiki page claims he made the "mission style" official for government buildings (?)

The fountain seems to be celebrating the "old-boy network" even more than it does Flint:

wiki

We should make La Cañada Flintridge a present of it:

publicartinLA

It's unfortunate viewed from the side anyway.

Thanks for the information and history of the Flint Memorial Fountain t2.

When I look at that snapshot my eye is drawn to the man reading the newspaper.
Who is he? Is he on his lunch break? Is he searching the want ads for a job? We'll never know.

I just noticed the hotel sign on the building across the street. (to the left of the man's newspaper)

That looks to be the 1883 the Natick House Hotel. It had frontages on 1st and Main:

Probably not this actual one, but there is still a big orange stand located on Foothill Blvd in Fontana. It is on the property of Bono's Italian Restaurant and Wikipedia indicates that it was originally 3 miles to the east along Foothill. Bono's originally had its own orange but it was torn down. The owner then bought this one and moved it.

There is some indication that the Orange Inn was located at what is now Foothill and Wigwam. The corner of Foothill and Wigwam is in Arcadia. The property was owned by a man named Hal Slemons who had a lot of land north of Foothill in the 20's and 30's.

The Orange Inn was turned into the place called the Wigwam, which was apparently thatched with palm leaves according to a blog here:
https://tangentialmeanderings.wordpr...rhood-changes/

According to the blogger, the McDonald's located on the north side of Foothill is where the Orange Inn/ Wigwam was located

That's great information oldstuff.

And look what I found; a photograph of the Wig-Wam (with thatched roof like you said)

http://www.ebay.com/itm/1924-Origina...item43df516362

the seller lists the date as 1924, the same year as the Orange Inn photograph. So did they co-exist? -or does the seller have his years mixed up?

Like it or not, the "old-boy network" built Los Angeles; without it, we'd have little to look at here. The fountain belongs in LA.

Btw, a good read is the recent Water to the Angels by Lee Standiford (Amazon: http://amzn.to/1dMRHCr)

A few priors on the Flint fountain:

I had forgotten all about that color slide GW. The lawn looks awfully dry. -didn't they have sprinklers in the 1940?

I disagree. We'd have plenty to look at here, including much many on the thread regret the loss of. Democracy holds no terrors for me.

Just a brief follow-up on Flyingwedge's two terrific posts on the Rand-Cone House, AKA the Baldwin Hills Oli Field House.

The filming location site for the home has dozens of color photos of the interior, exterior, grounds and views. Well worth a look:

I'm lost on this one too. Are the Orange Inn and the Wig-Wam the same building? Is the orange still in there under the thatch?
(Note the two smaller peaks on the Wig-Wam match the secondary oranges on the Orange Inn)

Martin_Pal, thanks for the 'train buddies' photographs. (especially the one where they're sleeping on the train) -very touching.

I'm intrigued by the faded white lines that angle away from the intersection (lower right). Why are they there?
Is it something to do with the streetcar line?

Here's a close-up of the dashing police officer.

white gloves, white hat...very spiffy.

He might be! My grandfather, a Hollywood kid, went in the Navy in early 1945 when he was 17. His correct birthdate 9-1-27 is on his papers so he didn't lie about his age. They were recruiting at his high school (Fairfax). He never did get his diploma.

There's a nice coffee table book with lots of really lovely buddy pictures called At Ease: Navy Men of WWII

This handsome sailor and his date are at Waldorf Cellar, 521 S. Main. I sure hope he made made it home safe and got offered a movie contract.
