I agree. I'd really love to see the cut and cap segments align more closely to the Reconnect Austin plan:

•Depress the main lanes of the interstate below grade from south of Holly St. to north of 15th St.;
•Structure the walls of the depressed main lanes so they can support a future cap along the entire corridor;
•Rebuild all the bridges that currently cross I-35 and build them to Austin’s Great Streets standards;
•Re-engage every historic connection across the highway for all users, including those currently not addressed in the Implementation Plan (2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 9th, and 10th);
•Design the frontage roads as multi-modal, moderate speed arterials that function as part of the grid

This is more of a silly "but what if" thing but I'd maybe like to see the western frontage road of the cut-and-capped interstate from River to 15th renamed East Avenue.

No! That would be just a bad a symbolic return to a segregationist past. Remove the sociological barrier of the interstate and add another one! ...

If we're gonna rename things, let's name it after Barbara Jordan.

That's true now that I think about it, though I doubt they'd rename it after Barbara Jordan because I know they try to avoid names that are too similar to streets already in the 911 database and since Barbara Jordan Boulevard exists I think that's too similar for the city's taste.

It'd be such a major thoroughfare though so I mean definitely it'd need an iconic name and Barbara Jordan is more than worthy of having another street named after her but practically...

East Avenue was the original name of the street before I-35 cannibalized it.

I'm all for renaming it East Avenue. I don't really care about the bleeding-heart stuff. It was originally named East Avenue because...well...it's the eastern edge of downtown. Duh. It was named East Avenue in 1839, years before the Civil War. It wasn't some divide back then.

My grandparens and great grandparents were born and raised east of East Ave. Coincidentally, they were not black.

Ha. That's pretty funny.

I'm just saying, there were many white people living east of East Ave well before I-35 was built. It was not a barricade then. What made it a barricade was the interstate. Before that it was just a wide street that allowed the West to East grid be intact. That's what we are aiming for with cut and cap.

Okay so I was debating where to post this but anyway since we discussed the upcoming pedestrian rail crossing I figured I'd give it a go here.

Does anybody know about a timeline regarding that Bowie Street Underpass connecting Sandra Muraida to Bowie at 3rd? Has it been scrapped?

I figure they're waiting for Seaholm to finish their roadworks, especially with Walter Seaholm Drive.

If none of y'all know I'll contact Public Works again but later, I don't want to bug them too often.

It is still happening. The City is in final negotiations with the railroad. The railroad will begin by building new bridges around mid-2015.

Here's the slides from a presentation in August for the downtown transit gateway. I'm curious about the green line shown in these.

In the renderings towards the end, I think I prefer the "ufo" plan.

I do too (i.e., page 38-41). However, the design on pages 46-49 are not that bad either.

While I have preferences.... I am just happy to see some "exuberance" in the design. Hope one of the happens full scale!

AND.. what I really like is that the renderings show reclaiming the parking lot behind the Fire Station and returning it to parkland!!!!!!!! yes please.
