Wow! Terrific find Martin_Pal.

A few days ago we were in Granada Hills discussing the Granada Building.
Also in Granada Hills....

James Cagney's ranch 1930s.

ebay

This looks like a truly amazing place....just look at the size of the barn and out buildings.

It looks like part of a retaining wall. In this and an earlier photo, I believe that the road on the left leads to Sunset Ranch, and the road on the right comes from Bronson Canyon (home of the Bat Cave).

Thanks for all the great replies to my post. I had a pretty decent collection of Hollywood Sign photos already, but you folks posted several I'd never seen before and it's great to have them. Pretty wild to see a swimming pool on top of Mt. Lee, what a surprise!

Here we see a rock retaining wall to shore up the side of the road.

The men with sacks on their shoulders are casting grass seed. Hopefully the grass will grow before the rainy season. As we all know, if there is a lot of rain, those mountain roads could be washed out. The grass will help keep the sides of the road from turning into mud. This would not be good PR for Hollywoodland.

I think you are referring to an optical illusion of a retaining wall being partially obscured by terrain and then wrapping around a hill to support the road. Not a Triangle at all.

The men in this photo appear to be Mr. DeLario's office draftsmen. I don't know about today but back then, architectural draftsmen were well-known for wearing bow ties. They even used to joke about it themselves.

My high school drafting teacher also always wore a bow tie, because a long tie could get in the way when you were leaning close to an inclined drafting board or a plan on a flat table. Even worse if it dragged through a freshly-inked section.

Cheers,

Earl

Thanks Earl.....I had forgotten the reason. I don't think they teach classic drafting anymore in high school....everything has gone to computers.

No Irish

The juxtaposition of two words got a NY bar in trouble. Yup, I know that it isn't LA, but I thought it was humorously pertinent.

Today one would probably be hard pressed to find a real drafting table in use anywhere. And how about those Luxo Lamps with the magnifier in their center and table mounted drafting squares. How hard is it today to come up with Velum or drafting tape?

If anyone gets the urge to do things the old fashioned way, I'll be happy to loan out my drafting table.........LOL. Think I may also have a few sheets of Velum as well.

Since we're revisiting the top of Mt. Lee.

-luckily I was able to find it again. Here it is folks....the swimming pool atop Mt. Lee

1939 seems awfully early for this photograph.

Earlier tonight I received a message from a very important member that said they were quitting the thread.
(in fact, it's the second message I received like that this week.

It makes me sad.

"metal teeth on hinges" -someone put some thought into this.

The Hawaii Theater was practically next door to one of the Black Dahlia's favorite haunts....the Florentine Gardens.
It's almost a given she walked past this jingoistic display. I wonder what she made of it?

That news item is date stamped April, 1945. Elizabeth Short arrived in California in July, 1947. It's likely that the Hirohito plaster head was already removed by the end of the war.

Taft Farmhouse

Last week I attended a presentation at the San Fernando Valley Historical Society and one of the photos presented was this one, which I thought worth sharing here.

This pre-1900 farmhouse originally stood on the southeast corner of Hollywood and Vine. When the Taft building was built in 1923, this house was moved to the corner of Hollywood Blvd and Canyon Drive, an intersection that no longer exists - it's now a 101 off-ramp. A subsequent second move took it to its current location, at 16745 San Fernando Mission Blvd in Granada Hills.
