That's Doheny Dr. just north of Santa Monica Blvd., right at the edge of Beverly Hills. In fact the fountain is in the city limits but the buildings are not. The buildings are still there, as is the fountain.

A pioneer of another sort was Martin Andrew Leach of Leach Motor Car Co. at 1248 S. Flower. Related Dort Motor Cars were sold at 1132 S. Grand and NE Corner of Fourth and Broadway. (Per 1917 CD). Factory at 4800 Santa Fe Ave. Probably resided in Santa Monica. Read more about him and the Leach brand here => http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/l/leach/leach.htm and here =>http://theoldmotor.com/?p=70254

The 1926 CD lists the Faith Maternity Hospital at 1739 Morton Avenue. That would put it near the lower right corner of the aerial below. The building currently on that site is Echo Park Senior Housing - a little controversy about its construction can be found in a 1992 LA Times article. I'm pretty sure the square house near the top left (arrowed) is the same house that appears below the "S" of "IMAGES" in the original picture.

As ProphetM noted, the above photo is located at the park area on the northwest corner of Santa Monica Blvd. and Doheny, dividing West Hollywood and Beverly Hills.

Below is a photo of the northeast corner. The second building up Doheny is the building that appears in E_R’s photo.

This one is dated 1945.

Gloria Swanson and Leach
http://theoldmotor.com/wp-content/up...02/LeachII.jpg

I'm not sure if I could think up a worse name for a car than "Leach"... Mr. Leach might have sold a few more cars with a something a little sweeter-sounding. Anyway, in reading a little more about the Leach, I noticed this slightly interesting synchronicity with Gloria Swanson:

"Celebrity owners included silent cowboy Tom Mix who owned a 1921 Leach single-seat roadster and Marcella Desmond, the sister of silent move stars William and Lucille Desmond, who owned a 5-passenger 1920 Leach touring with an attractive California top."

Never heard of these Desmonds...

Speaking of the park and fountain and the above building at Santa Monica Blvd. and Doheny, this post I did (link below) shows many photos of this intersection, including a large color photo from 1965 which shows a portion of the above building as the Dr. R. (---?) Smith Pet Hospital. (You can also see it in the "Double Standard" b&w photo.)

There was NO construction of a "women's Olympic village", the women athletes were simply housed IN the Chapman Park Hotel in 1932 according to all available sources. I don’t know if a new Chapman Park Hotel was relocated or built after that or if it was expanded (“& Villas”?) or what, but there was already one on Wilshire in 1932.

Gaylord Wilshire can you clear up the Chapman Park Hotel information? A lot of sites list the hotel as being built in 1936.

Apparently, it's from the 1980s which puts it outside my area of research, but I'm still surprised I'd not come across it before.
MT, refer to my posts I did about the Northwest corner of Hollywood and Vine:

The Leach cars introduced for 1923 were simply the 1922 models with $1,000 slashed off their price tags. Operations moved from 4800 S. Santa Fe Avenue to a smaller facility at 112 West 9th Street and production of the Leach was discontinued shortly thereafter. http://www.coachbuilt.com/bui/l/leach/leach.htm

Maybe it was the lack of a carefully chosen cuisine that was the final spoon in Leach's mustard or was it lack of public accommodations or failure to adapt to something amphibious (see below)?

112 W Ninth Street currently houses an eatery.

The building at 112 W. Ninth was allegedly built in 1913 and "last" renovated in 1915. Alleged current concerns include risks posed by flooding and earthquake. http://commercial-properties.findthe...geles-CA-90015

The Chapman Park Hotel was built in 1925. In 1936, architect Carleton Monroe Winslow collaborated with landscape architects Bashford and Barlow on the Spanish-Colonial Revival/Mexican bungalows and beautifully landscaped grounds.

The last confectionery we visited was the Black Cat in the Hotel Hayward.

Here's another, the Wisteria Sweet Shop located at 312 S. Broadway, circa 1910.

[QUOTE=3940dxer;6646872]I wonder who the contemplative gentleman in the photo was, and I wonder what happened to him in the years after the photo was taken.QUOTE]

Although we focus on buildings, vehicles, trolleys, buses, etc., on these pages, it's interesting to look at the people in the pictures. I too look at an old photo and wonder about the people in them when they are not identifed. Who were they, what were their names, what did their lives consist of in later years, when did they die, or for more recent pictures, are they still living? Each of these persons was a human being, and each of their stories would be interesting to listen to if only we could.

Truly a mystery.

The connection to Los Angeles is quite interesting. I'm guessing Truly is an obsolete town.....long gone.

Here's 213 East 29th Street mentioned in the description, directly south of downtown Los Angeles.
