CityBoyDoug & HossC, thanks for the interesting Gilmore truck photos with the neon. It says the color scheme was blue, green and orange. Does anyone know if that was Gilmore's colors they used for all of their endeavors?

I happened to see this other photo today of a Gilmore truck, dated 1939. One of those gentlemen is Earl Gilmore.

That little mechanic was great in 'Kiss Me Deadly'. What did he always say?..."bada bing! swoosh pow!" I can't remember exactly.

northwest corner of 6th Street and Grand Avenue. The Mayflower Hotel is just a bit up Grand.

12/20/56 - Standard Oil service station occupies a triangular block of North Alameda Street, Main Street and Macy Street.

Interesting photo - The area where the Standard Oil station stood is outlined in red. Behind the station, (outlined in blue) was the area that was once China City.
At the back of the photo (circled in green) is the recently discussed building on Ord Street that has had its top floors chopped off.

I've been to this restaurant many times during the late 1950's. They had excellent high quality food and it was always consistent....my mom and father liked to eat there during his last years.

And yes, ER its googie style architecture for sure.

The seller's other photo showing Main north of 5th in 1886 is superb, as well. The close-up is particularly interesting in its details.

This seems to be another one of those under-photographed blocks. The 1921 Baist map shows the Weil Block there. The LAPL has a photo of the Weil Block, and says it "housed the Security Savings Bank and Trust Co., a predecessor of the contemporary Security Pacific National Bank, which opened in this building on Main Street, on February 11, 1889" It was a 3-story building. But none of this helps explain the ghost staircase!
