Looks like the original sign is still up on the roof too.

You're right FredH. Old rooftop signs are my weakness. I love them! It seems most owners can't be bothered to remove them.

The Hollywood Flower Pot at 1124 Vine Street, circa 1920.

Notice the Cinema Props. Co. in the distance.

below: The Flower Pot still in business ten years later...1930. Good for them!

Amen to that....always a bonus to see a rooftop sign - even if the lettering is long-since gone and all we see are the bones.

I'm sure there's a cost-factor involved as well, E.R., and not just sloth. Usually the owners of these older buildings are small business types, often immigrants. These guys throw around nickels like they are manhole covers.......and I don't blame them one bit.

You say there's an old sign on the roof? It's not causing any problem, and no one from the City is telling me to get rid of it? Fuggitaboutit.

Artist's sketch of the $3,000,000 Milliron's department store in Westchester on Sepulveda Blvd. near Manchester. The new structure has many ultra-modern features, including a rooftop parking area reached by huge concrete motor ramps. The store formally opened on March 17, 1949.

Was acquired by the Broadway in the 1950s. The building later became a Mervyn's and is now Kohl's.

No longer has parking on the roof.

Oops...looks like we touched on this earlier....Milliron's.

The four free-standing display windows out front were something I've never seen repeated by anyone. The Broadway kept them up but then they were demolished. Can't recall the year just now.

I love department stores. My first job was in the display dept at Marshall Field & Co in Chicago.

I remember parking on that rooftop in 1969! Had to buy socks for my Sr. Prom when it was Broadway! Battery died and had to have my dad push my car around on the roof until it started. (alternative to jumping)! ha.

OMG! LOL. How many "elegant men bought their ties there? And got a good deal on their watches too, while they were at it. Love it.

I'm going to be off work for the next two weeks and hope to visit DTLA for a few walking tours and photo shoots. Anyone else in the area available or want to come along to share in the knowledge of the streets, buildings, and history of the area? Would love some company and new perspectives we can share.

Thx for the Walker's info, I only knew this building as Milliron's/Orbach's
(now it has what is just about my least favorite base modernization):

Tragic news article. I'll remember that forever.

I thought we must have seen this building before... that it must have been a Ralphs or an A&P. It was in fact a market, but not one I was really familiar with. It was one of the Carty Brothers' eight in the city. There was a Van de Kamp's at this location, which I thought might help in locating a picture of the market, but no such luck. Maybe someone else can unearth a shot.

In the process of looking for the Carty market on Washington, I found a few other standing streamline buildings...

3071 East 12th St, Boyle Heights

3821 South Santa Fe Ave, Vernon

5931 Hollywood Blvd; the address is the same, but I can't explain the differences in the corner of the building.

6634 Sunset Blvd. We've looked at this block before: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/showpost.php?p=5558542&postcount=6078
--the horizontal louvers don't appear to be original to the building, but I do like the more colorful treatment of the facade, whatever its vintage, compared to the dreary brown of today.
