310 South Lafayette Park Place, cont'd

Source

It turns out that 310 South Andrews Boulevard/310 South Lafayette Park Place was built by one Ceilan M Spitzer (some sources say in 1915, others 1917; bio here). Spitzer was only able to enjoy it for a short time before expiring. There is a newspaper mention of a Mrs. Charles R Stevens living in the house in 1920; how long she was there is unclear, but according to later reportage, the McKinleys acquired it in 1939.

Thx. Fascinating. After reading your first link, I would have supported acquittal.

The second link adds that the victim had been a famous roller skater. I'll bet she had a story worth knowing too.

The Santa Cruz Adobe, located at 641-643 North Broadway in Chinatown. Next door is the Bozzani Motor Car Company (639-641 North Broadway) which we have discussed a few times before. The Bozzan iMotor Car building was formerly the Los Angeles and Redondo Railway Depot. The Santa Cruz Adobe was demolished in 1957.

Thanks v. much for your post GW. I think, perhaps, that the McKinley residence is one I've been looking for. Because the angle I have is not the same as the one you posted, I'm not 100% certain, so I thought I'd post it and ask for opinions from the group.

This billboard is curious. It obviously did not work out. I wonder what streets were on that diagram.

Anyway...I couldn't find anything with the %&#@ing "search" feature here ... I'm sure we were once in this bend of freeway, at the door of that gray building... and then I remembered Mabel Monohan: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=1235.

It was none other than BARBARA GRAHAM, Noir Princess, who once lived at 1438 Wright Street... well, Rycroft, I know this isn't really about the coral-colored building you were asking about, but I wonder if its story can top 1438's?
Interesting history on the grey building and glad it has a norish connection to stay on topic of the forum

Information on either building is always interesting. I love the history of LA and as someone who lived and worked in the city as an ambulance driver for several years, I've often wondered about what the history and stories were behind so many of the buildings.

I would have liked to have seen if any photos exists of that area before the Santa Monica freeway went in. I know this is just west of the Young Apartments which seem to be a favorite place on here I did manage to find out that both buildings went up in the early 1920s, but unable to find out anything else.

Here's a shot I took on Broadway in 2009 while touring the city (I'm also a photographer). I was surprised when I found a shot that was taken in in 1957 of the exact same area!

La Brea (just down from Gillingham DeSoto), moving to 400 by 1934, where it was still listed in 1987 and, apparently, beyond.
Over the years auto dealerships seemed to proliferate like weeds up and down La Brea. I have heard it said that Nugent Chevrolet had a showroom at 3rd and La Brea, although this is not necessarily borne out by a cursory perusal of the directories. I have a vague recollection of an auto showroom at 3rd and La Brea's northwest corner, but can't say for certain it was Nugent or any specific dealer. It may also have been a camera store for a brief time (Samy's?) The location is currently a Trader Joe's. I am told that the building retains the showroom's original leaded glass windows (covered by the awnings - below). Does anyone have any photos of the building when it was occupied by Nugent or some other dealership?

Virtually across the street from Trader Joe's is a Ralph's grocery store (260 S. La Brea). At one time, the northern part of the lot was Irv White Buick (250 S. La Brea). I think there may have even been a Pontiac dealership to the north of Irv White Buick. Do any photo's of that dealership and/or the Ralph's - (in one of its earlier versions) exist? My efforts to locate any have been unsuccessful.

How about Holmes Tuttle Ford at 361 S. La Brea? (Mr. Tuttle evidently began a lengthy friendship when he sold a car to some actor named Ronald Reagan. http://www.tuttleclick.com/dealership/about.htm It is likely this occurred at Mr. Tuttle's Beverly Hills Lincoln dealership.)

Hard to ignore this iconic image of La Brea looking south from Third Street, from the Stooges' 1936 "False Alarms." Pretty sure that equally iconic neon Chevy "bow tie" - sign on the left was Nugent's original 6th and La Brea location. I suspect the "Dodge" sign on the west/right side of La Brea was actually part of what later became the Chrysler-Jeep dealership posted by GW (below). If not, a remaining part of the Dodge dealership is currently occupied by furniture purveyor.

A few blocks west of 3rd and La Brea is a building with a most interesting rooftop decoration. To my uneducated eye it smacks of Zig Zag. 5873 W. 3rd Street A directory search suggests the location was used for many years by Pride Laundry. Building has look similar to those on La Brea.

A few block north of the 3rd Street location is another attention grabbing building. Location = 7605 Beverly Boulevard, virtually across the street from where the Pan Pacific Auditorium was located. The attention grabber is actually the large rooftop advertising superstructure above the building. I am particularly curious about what was being advertised and the history of the sign and the building over which it towers. The obvious size of the advertising would have likely made it unmissable by most Pan Pacific visitors. For this reason I would expect it appears in a few Pan Pacific images. The building currently houses a restaurant named Terroni. It was previously the Authentic Cafe. In '42 it was an upholstery shop.

So who here has heard of Dragon Road? Apparently it was "near Sunset and Main" and was something like Olvera Street. This is from 1940:

Another picture from what I presume is the other end:

EDIT: google has of course turned up the answer, that being it was part of China City which gsgansen among others has already covered.

But Mom's little black UMM address book has only one "Maxine" in it – the wife of a "Robert H. McKinley." (If that was MHM's brother, that would make Maxine MHM's sister-in-law.)

There's no way of knowing if that's the same Maxine, of course, but if it was, one could cook up a whole bunch of interesting scenarios from these little snippets of info!

Also had a look through my "baby book" last night, and it turns out that MHM gave me a present for the occasion of my birth.

I do still have a little white knit cap that was mine that is the size that would only fit a newborn. Here it is!

Heh, I can thank my packrat mom for all these items surviving. (And my own apparently inherited packrat traits for not throwing this old stuff away!)

La Brea car dealerships?

It's hard to keep track of the businesses comings and goings and my take on things is probably equally difficult to follow. I have looked for unposted photos of the area, but have thus far been less than successful. Still looking for an aerial of the Bob's Air Mail on Wilshire.) Perhaps someone else can fill in a few pieces of the puzzle.

Using '73 as an arbitrary reference point, La Brea Dodge was a 339 S. La Brea (west side of La Brea) is the likely address for the Dodge Sign depicted in the "False Alarms" photo.

On the east side of the street is listed Fleet Auto parts 323 S. La Brea. Barish Chrysler Plymouth along with Enterprise Auto Leasing was at 444 S. La Brea (which would put it also on the east side of the street, probably next to Nugent (400 S La Brea.)

I am not very familiar with that area and certainly less so in what might have been its 1950-1970's heyday. But I wonder if you haven't confused the corner of Sixth and La Brea with Third and La Brea. Is it possible that at varying times, both intersections had auto showrooms on their respective northeast corners? To be clear I don't have any specific evidence of this although I recall sometime perhaps in the late '80s when that building served many ventures including a bar and/or a nightclub. For what its worth searching that location also pulls up the name "Trailer Trash" that has some association with food service. http://www.manta.com/c/mmgh5ln/trailer-trash

The 6th and La Brea location is currently occupied by "Deco Home" that uses a 467 S. La Brea address, obviously not 6th and La Brea. It looks like 5435 was Los Altos Cleaners. (It was a dry cleaning business even in the '40s and in '87 was listed as a business called "Hands on.") Union Oil was and still is at 5436 W. 6th Street.

To the south and eastern side of La Brea, at "600 S." there is a listing for La Brea Car center and La Brea imports. I vaguely remember this address as a parking lot. On the western side of the street, at 611, the former Foam home and Desoto destination, was "Sammy's garage."

I know it's been posted before, but the Firestone Store on 8th and S. La Brea, (south of Wilshire) deserves many viewings.

Fascinating structure said to be in Sherman Oaks. Depending upon source, ca., '25 or '27. Source suggests Ventura and/or Van Nuys Blvds. Can't recall having seen it before or a topic of discussion here. Notice ad for Cahuenga Park. I do not think it is the same as the Cahuenga Park that might have been Monkey Island-adjacent? (3300 Cahuenga)

Virtually across the street from Trader Joe's is a Ralph's grocery store (260 S. La Brea).

Sanborn Maps

I thought at first that the rounded corner of the nw corner of La Brea & 3rd might be an old Morgan Walls Ralphs store... but it seem not. (Somewhere on the thread is a newspaper ad showing all the Raplhs location, but I couldn't locate it.) It was, however once a drugstore...

Los Angeles Times Dec 27, 1932

There is a 1954 Times article describing the assumption of the space by Beaver Hudson, which may have been in the "used auto sales" space to the north of the corner. Hudson was on its last independent legs in 1954, however, so this plan may never have come about. Pictures of the corner ever being used as a car dealer are elusive...

The Ralphs was opened in January 1962; judging by the roof of the Ralphs on the corner today (set back from 3rd Street, that is), it looks like bones of the building might be the same and that the current (unfortunate) exterior walls have replaced the interesting glass facades.

Unihi:

The building currently housing Trader Joe's was for many years (I remember it in 1960-61, when the Ralph's across the street was built) as housing a furniture store called "Richard W. Lee", purveyors of some of the ugliest stuff you could imagine. (Lots of lamps with crystal drops & the infamous glass coffee tables supported by ceramic panthers with giant rhinestone eyes). Lee occupied the premises until - I think - sometime in the '80s. In its furniture store days, the huge plate-glass windows revealed the store's contents to the world -- had always thought that the place must have been built as an auto dealership.
