Hi everyone! I have been lurking & enjoying all the great pics for a few weeks now.

I have a couple of photos that I hope you can help me with. My grandfather owned a couple of flower shops, probably in the late 40's to early 50's. I don't know the streets they were on, but I have a few clues.

Address looks like 8684. CR phone exchange. (Also from 1938 directory: Lord - Schade Flrstr 8684 W. Pico Blvd. LA Crstvw 1-4344) (Thx to GaylordWilshire for his quick find also)

This one may be a little easier. Address looks like 10680. (WooHoo! I found an online LA phone directory from 1938 that lists the Nose Gay Flower Shop at 10660 W. Pico Blvd. Ardner g-4131)

This may be of interest only to me, but what the heck. This is the house my grandmother, father & uncles lived in circa 30's to 40's. 2933 S. Orange Dr. 90016

So of course I had to look it up on Google maps & it's flanked by apartments, but it still stands!

And to make sure it's Noirish, my uncle Paul Lord. Cameraman & Editor late 40's to 1956.

Thanks in advance!

Welcome to the thread, SoCalPaul, and it's great to see your images. The first shop was at 8684 W Pico. There appear to be a few remnants of the corner's time as a flower depot.

As for the Nose Gay location--there were also a number of Roberts Public Markets quite a distance from downtown L.A. in directions other than west (the company was based in Santa Monica). I really can't make out the address on the Nose Gay. But if it's 11-thousand something... there was a Roberts once way down at 11014 S. Figueroa. The street view today shows two buildings reminiscent of the Nose Gay and the Roberts market, but not the same. Could your grandfather have had a shop all the way down on 110th Street?

In 1940, Roberts stores in the Santa Monica & West LA area included 312 (an early Paul Williams design--more on that later), 1505, and 1915 Wilshire in SM, 11841 Wilshire in BH, and 11526 SM Blvd in West LA. Also in SM at 420 Broadway, 2716 Main, and 1311 Montana. Some of these buildings still stand, but I didn't see any that corresponded to the one in your pic.

P.S.-- A little more history on the Roberts chain:

"Fred Roberts was the founder of Roberts Public Market, a Santa Monica based chain of grocery and liquor stores started in the late 1920s. (From 1936 through 1948 the Roberts Public Market rented space in the Williams designed Edwin Building.) A successful entrepreneur, Roberts would expand his markets to 19 stores in Santa Monica, Venice, and throughout Los Angeles. He sold the chain to Fitzsimmons Stores in 1949." (Los Angeles Times, October 21, 1949).

Wow, That's great! It does look like the building next to the flower shop is a pottery shop of some sort. My Grandfather probably subleased the space.

The other location is probably on the westside. I'm thinking maybe on Wilshire. I had already found the info on Robert's Public Market, but I was hoping someone would recognize this building.

My Grandmother owned a dress shop on Wilshire at Western where the subway station is now, but I have not found any pics yet.

I'll have to get down there & see if the pottery sign is still there. Unfortunately it's probably gone.

Thanks for the help!

What happened to the "Top Hate Cafe" ? Do any photos of it exist ?

Welcome to the thread SoCalPaul!

What was the name of your grandmother's dress shop? I have many pictures of that intersection in my files as my parents lived right around the corner on St Andrews Place during the war years.

Thanks

Apparently there was a celebration at the Top Hat to mark the one-year anniversary of her discovery....

I thought I had some 'Top Hat' ephemera on an old CD...but it turned out to be 'Hi Hat' instead.

I checked out the address and 8657 W. Pico is still a nightclub. The old building still lurks behind that tacked on cheesy hipster facade.

below: In this view you can see the old building anchoring the ridiculous front.

Pink Lady of Malibu Canyon

From the website The Valley Observed:

The Valley Observed

On the morning of October 29, 1966, commuters in Malibu Canyon were shocked by a vision that seemed to appear overnight on a shear rock face. Cavorting on the cliff was a 60-foot-high, brilliant-pink figure of a joyfully nude maiden, clutching flowers. The mysterious Pink Lady became a national media sensation. Crowds came to gawk and to wonder who painted her—and how. Throngs grew as the mystery deepened. County officials declared the Pink Lady a traffic hazard and attempted to remove her, but high-pressure water sprays only made her gleam more brightly. Paint remover didn't work. On the ground, her admirers became protective, heckling the county crews and signing petitions that called efforts to erase the Pink Lady "prudish, inartistic, inhuman and apathetic."
When the creator stepped forward, shock reigned again. Lynne Seemayer, a 31-year-old artist and mother who lived in Northridge, had spent nights for several months hanging from ropes in the dark drawing the outline. In one marathon session, she applied the paint then went home to make breakfast for her kids. Acclaim and proposals of marriage rolled in, plus offers to join nudist groups. She also got hate mail and a bill from the county. People read all kinds of meaning into the Pink Lady, but Seemayer explained, "I did it simply as an art piece, and that was all." Fourteen gallons of drab gray paint ended the Pink Lady's short life—although for a decade afterward a faint outline could be glimpsed over the tunnel mouth.

I can almost still see her up there:

Dear e_r... I'm afraid the USC archives has mislabeled again... they need us, they really do. Anyway, this is the Parkinson-designed Engine Co. 18, which still very much stands. (Look closely at the facade.) It is on Hobart, but miles south of Hollywood, just below Adams Blvd. The tower has been cut down. It's Historic-Cultural Monument #349. See this earlier post: http://forum.skyscraperpage.com/show...postcount=3462.

Looks like the flower shop is gone, but the Roberts Market has been "remodeled".

The pic above just shows how eager designers were to lop off any Deco ornamentation from old buildings when "modernizing".. A shame but that's life..

It's the straight version of that gay 'gas station' that opened down the street.
