At least one person is believed to be dead after the roof of an underground parking garage collapsed Wednesday morning in Montreal, police say.

As a precaution, firefighters have evacuated a 20-storey apartment building next to the garage, located on Deguire Boulevard in the city's Saint-Laurent neighbourhood.

The cause of the collapse, which happened just before 9 a.m. ET, is still unknown. Few other details were immediately available.

As a precaution, firefighters have evacuated a 20-storey apartment building next to the garage, located at 135 Rue Deguire in the city's Saint-Laurent neighbourhood.

Emergency crews were called to the scene at 8:47 a.m. ET. Fire officials said three buses are on scene to transport people away from the site.

Officials said it is still too early to determine the cause of the collapse. Few other details were immediately available.

Sad. I'd hate to be leaving my parking garage in the morning for work only to get squished on the way out.

Someone, (a resident?) in a French article said an outdoor swimming pool and the water located above the garage might have been a cause by deteriorating the concrete structure.

On the map we can clearly see a large outdoor swimming pool between Towers 2 and 3.
