Lwize, I am not sure if your idea of
old school Chinese food is the same as mine, but when I want old-school Chinese food, I head to Won Kok in Chinatown. Their food is exactly like the Chinese food my parents used to bring home in the 1970s. They serve all of the old American-Chinese classics that you can't find anywhere else anymore, such as Egg Foo Yung.
I describe this place to my friends by saying “ever seen a 1970s movie where the cops are staked out and they're eating Chinese food from a cardboard carton? This is the food they're eating.”
Your mileage may vary, but to my taste buds at least, this stuff is identical to the Chinese food you used to get “back in the day”. And I took my mom to Won Kok before she died, and she fully agreed with my assessment.
