TransLink to fix big gap in North Vancouver transit route Brent Richter Jun 14, 2023 2:22 PM
The North Shore’s R2 RapidBus is about to get a bit more elbow room through one of the most congested corridors of its route.

The City of North Vancouver and TransLink are set to begin a six-month construction project to extend the eastbound transit lane along Third Street and Cotton Road to Gladstone Avenue. Currently, the transit lane ends about two-thirds of the way down the hill from Queensbury Avenue, requiring the R2 to merge with general traffic for about 650 metres before getting back to a bus lane....

Through traffic on Highway 1 over bridge going faster now but with no new lanes on the bridge that capacity had to come from somewhere.

Main street onramp now seems to be slower than before Highway One Improvements: North Vancouver / Ironworkers Memorial Approach.

That change in dynamic precipitated this project Tvisforme noted moving ahead sooner than later. (imho).

When they begin if anyone is over there for pic updates we'd appreciate

But even look at the bridge now it's backed up close to Lynn Valley but traffic along Main Street is just sort of slow from Brooksbank. It's more of a problem with heavy trucks trying to do 30km/h in the outer/middle lane that causes more backups than anything with traffic volume.

They could have replaced this bridge too and had the third lane join up with the third lane that starts on just the other side of it?

It's strange the overpass signs have 4.41m/4.52m. Website is 4.32/4.32

And then 4.44 and 4.52. Website is 4.35/4.31

You assume they use the website and don't rely on the signs.

And from Google Maps there's noticeable damage on that overpass from previous hits with exposed rebar.
Did province cheap out by replacing everything else at north end except this overpass?

I mean it wouldn't do anything to help improve traffic flow. Though if they replaced it they could also add a pull off shoulder along that stretch. It probably doesn't make a lot of sense to replace it until they figure out the long-term plans for the bridge and where they would stick a new crossing/approaches etc.

The driver of the truck also fled the scene.

Problems with an old overpass may have been expected but I don’t think any of us were expecting a truck driver to flee on foot.

The plans for updating the Main Street/Deep Cove interchange were revised back in 2017 when a decision was made to prioritize changes to the stretch between Mountain Highway and Lillooet. Two new bridges were added, one on each side of the highway, for the Mountain Highway eastbound on-ramp and for westbound local traffic between Lillooet and Mountain Highway. The dangerous westbound merge point where the Seymour on-ramp and Mountain Highway off-ramp overlapped was eliminated.

Actually some of the 2016-2017 consultation documents had some "concepts" for replacing it with a new overpass north of the existing one

Time to open back up all the scales that used to exist.

Thank you for the recap of what was included in the project.

My comment was focused on what was not included in the project.

lol, a few more collisions and we may get this overpass replaced yet, despite being cut from the upgrade project.

They should force every tall load to register their route online prior to departing. If you are relying on them to check the routing then make it a mandatory step that can be checked by police/CVSE.

There were 10 (11 including this most recent one) bridge strikes in 2023. They have no data on any strikes on this overpass since 2021
