Tanger Outlets gets OK to open on holidays
Council voted 15-7 to give Tanger Outlets the option to open on most statutory holidays.
The Kanata shopping centre plans to open on New Year’s Day, Family Day, Victoria Day, Canada Day, Labour Day and Thanksgiving Day.
Provincial law governs holiday shopping days, but municipal councils can provide exemptions to stores and districts. Seven bylaws have allowed holiday shopping at various spots in Ottawa.
Coun. Keith Egli struggled to understand why the city should expand in-person shopping opportunities, especially during a pandemic, when many of the stores at Tanger Outlets aren’t homegrown businesses.
“If you really want those sneakers, you can get them online,” Egli said.
However, Coun. Allan Hubley said supporting the holiday shopping application means supporting local jobs. Tanger Outlets is only asking for what other commercial areas in Ottawa already have, Hubley said.
Mayor Jim Watson also criticized Egli’s comments, saying local shoe shops wouldn’t appreciate a councillor encouraging people to shop online instead.
The Ottawa and District Labour Council has indicated it would appeal a council decision to allow holiday shopping at Tanger Outlets.
