Actually, St. Louis was indeed the 3rd largest city in the US in 1870, kind of. It technically ranked #4 behind New York, Philadelphia and Brooklyn (then a separate city from NYC). So by today's measure, St. Louis was the 3rd biggest city at one time. Chicago surpassed St. Louis by 1880 and Brooklyn and New York merged into one, thereby relegating St. Louis to the #4 spot.
