I could be totally off base here and please, someone correct me if so, but those matchbook images of Carl's looks strikingly similar to what I remember being a Margarita Jones near the intersection of Flower and Figueroa. If that is the case, it would have actually survived many years post-Harbor Freeway construction, only to eventually succumb to a fire in 2001. Just a hunch.
