Voice-activated water wall along San Pedro Creek is downtown San Antonio's newest landmark

New York-based artist Adam Frank describes “STREAM,” his contribution to the San Pedro Creek Culture Park, as “a waterfall that listens to you.”

A bronze sculpture resembling an old-school microphone stands in front of the 250-foot water wall. A tiny 21st-century microphone is tucked inside the artwork.

“When anyone makes any noise into the microphone — they could be screaming, they could be laughing, they could be singing, they could be playing an instrument — their sounds are visualized in the lights in the water wall itself,” Frank said. “The idea here is to blend all of the sounds of San Antonio, whatever they may be, into the flow of the San Pedro Creek.”

The water wall can be found just a few feet from a funky art nook on Commerce Street that includes La Zona, an outdoor venue programmed by Centro San Antonio, and the Gao Brothers' gleaming silver sculpture "Miss Mao Trying to Poise Herself at the Top of Lenin’s Head." The area also is home to Texas Public Radio's headquarters and the historic Alameda Theater.

"It’s fun to be a part of this big cultural explosion happening," Frank said.
