Umm, without storage it is literally the worst at doing what you describe, unless you build 5x the number of cells you need most of the time. Otherwise, you end up with brownouts. With enough solar to cover your peaks you also destroy the price for electricity and end up having to split the market.

Personally I think solar doesn't need to become much cheaper, though longer lasting cells would be nice. Storage is the killer app now, not better cells.
