I also like how the derby would fix nicely on the dome. I have a pretty vivid imagination.
Horse-drawn mechanical street sweepers first came on the market in the 1840s. The first self-propelled street sweeper came out in 1914 - made by the Elgin company (still a common name in street sweepers http://www.elginsweeper.com/) it was delivered to Boise, Idaho (horse 'dust'?) and was successful.
