You're not really that far off. A few years ago, DSM had 5 murders the entire year. While things have been trending up since then as the metro grows, this year has been as rough as any since the 1990's gang/crack days. I would wager 16 murders is still quite an anomaly, and already exceeds the total for all of last year.
Not that there aren't concentrated poverty and crime issues here, but about 1/3 of the murders this year have been domestic disputes.
