Good to see a great old school building on the Lower East Side being put to productive use again.

Erie’s Wayne School sold, to get $7.5 million remodel

Wayne School served as a second home for Erie School District students on the city’s lower east side for 103 years, until the district closed the building in 2017.

The Erie Center of Arts and Technology is set to spend $7.5 million to renovate Wayne, which the Erie School Board agreed to sell to ECAT for $250,000 at a special board meeting on Monday.

ECAT will offer job training to underemployed adults and arts and technology classes to at-risk Erie School District high school students, who will attend ECAT over the summer and after school. ECAT is providing the programs at no cost. ECAT expects to start construction at Wayne this coming fall if it gets the funding commitments and the closing occurs on time, ECAT said.
