Sun Country reenters the St. Louis market.

Sun Country Airlines to land in St. Louis
06/26/18

Sun Country Airlines will launch nonstop service this fall from St. Louis to two Florida vacation destinations, the Eagan, Minn.-based discount carrier announced Tuesday.

The airline will fly Wednesdays and Saturdays to Ft. Myers, beginning Oct. 3, and to Tampa on Thursdays and Sundays, beginning Nov. 1.

The flights are currently scheduled through Jan. 7. Introductory fares are being offered as low as $74 one way, the airline said.

Southwest Airlines, the dominant passenger carrier serving St. Louis Lambert International Airport, currently offers one to four daily nonstop departures to Tampa and one to three daily nonstop departures to Fort Myers.

Sun Country Airlines, which initially focused on flying Minnesotans to Florida and Mexico, has changed hands several times and is currently controlled by Apollo Global Management, a private equity firm that is financing the airline’s expansion. Sun Country currently flies to 44 destinations in the U.S., Caribbean, Mexico and Costa Rica. As a low-cost airline, passengers pay fees for most carry-on baggage.

With the launching of new service to St. Louis, Sun Country becomes the 11th major passenger air carrier serving Lambert, and the second to launch operations here this year. WOW Air launched new international service between St. Louis and Reykjavik, Iceland, in May.
