Last year on the Monday after the race, over 20,000 people were trying to fly out of Austin at the same time. But when they arrived, it was more staggerded, so the smaller jets are sufficient for the staggered arrivals, and larger jets are needed for the mass exodus.
As far as using smaller planes to drive prices up, I don't believe this to be the case. Smaller planes that are full to capacity are more profitable than larger one that are not. So it only makes sense to adjust the aircraft to the demand. Plus, if Delta used that strategy, smaller planes = higher fares, they would lose passengers to the competition with lower fares.
