To be fair, Raleigh doesn't feel like the "South". It's dominated by northern transplants. It's kind of pulling a "DC" where it's technically Southern per Census, but transplants have transformed it. And nearby Duke is mostly kids from the NE Corridor.

Isn't there some joke where Duke is really UNJ at Durham or something?
