The way of thinking at the time was that the parkway "opened" up the scenic gorge to more people who could view it from inside their cars. A beautiful drive-thru experience unlike the old factory-lined streets through the city. Almost like a a virtual reality ride today, but behind the glass windows of your car, you never need to stop and get out. Like, why would anyone want to ever leave their car anyway, right? Drive-ins and drive-thrus were the thing.
