This would have environmental benefits, as well - all those buses crawling between NJ and Port Authority emit a ton of smog.
It might be a good idea for the 7 extension to have one or two intermediate stops, though. A transfer to HBLR at 9th Street might make some sense.

The line can obviously absorb commuters in the reverse direction easily enough but some of the stations, particularly Grand Central, would require significant reconfiguration/upgrades to handle additional peak ridership. It can certainly be done though and seems like a better option than spending an
insane amount of money on a new Manhattan located PABT.
